MenuFor business advisors or coaches looking for new clients (and those considering hiring one), what characteristics or traits make for the right match?
There isn't a great platform that connects business advisors with entrepreneurs and - like a dating site - asks each side to answer some questions about their personalities, traits and interests to generate a good match between the client and the advisor. I am interested in building this platform but only if it helps make valuable connections between companies and advisors. Asking the right questions can (presumably) make better matches, so that's why I'm asking this community for their input in what questions we ought to ask. Getting the right advisor can make a huge difference in the success of a company. That's why a helpful matching platform can potentially help so many companies succeed.

Experience is the key. Never hire a guru who doesn't have at least some grey hair. Don't take this statement literally, but look for experience when choosing a coach. Not experience as a coach, but experience as a person, a business person, marketer, or related to any topic for which you are seeking advice. And most importantly, Never ask your barber if you need a hair cut.

What advice do you give to a 16 year old entrepreneur with a start up idea?
First, hat tip to you for being a young entrepreneur. Keep it up! If you have the funds to build out your MVP, hire a developer and possibly a mentor. If your idea is marketable, you don't need to give up equity by bringing in a co-founder. If this is your entrepreneurial venture, I would recommend you do retain a coach to help you see all the things you may not know. Have you already done your SWOT analysis? Have you identified your target market? What is your marketing plan? What will be your operating expenses? There are lots of questions to ask. If you would a free call, I'd be happy to help you in more detail. If you could ask each of your employees a question each day, what would you ask?
"What was the best part of you day?" Ideally you could ask in the afternoon .. but it sets a positive intention. I ask this to all my friends + wife everyday when I see them.DM

What are your tips for gaining advisory/board positions?
Approach it as if you were applying for a position in an organization. You will want to find the right industry, the right management team, the right opening on the board [either governance or advisory], the right person to help you. Next create a statement that says why you on this board. Then sell it.MC

What are some weak habits that young entrepreneurs often do not notice about themselves?
Two huge ones: > Confusing activity for results. Many older entrepreneurs haven't learned the lesson, either. You can 'be busy' into oblivion. > Confusing social interaction for prospecting and sales activity. Talking =/= Qualifying. You should not be trying to let "everyone" know you exist. Find your target market and focus your effort there. Otherwise, you'll waste your energy.JK
