India Entry Strategy

Often global companies get enamored by the huge market potential in India little realising that India is a sum of various parts & not the whole itself. For 10 years with high precision plastic injection molding, tooling for the healthcare, automotive, electronics I was involved in developing & implementing a entry strategy successfully. Since last 3 1/2 years I have been doing the same for my current employer with varying degrees of success.

The critical aspect in all cases has been the fact that I have been able to in advance identify, communicate and bridge where possible the cultural gaps that rarely are seen in the beginning of a relationship but which can take the experience into a disaster zone.

Market Entry Strategy

Right from my 1st job I have luckily been involved in creating a new market for my company either in terms of a geography, a new product, a new application. This enabled me to fine tune my experience over time giving me confidence to handle such assignments.

Opening the cold storage market, a new process in edible oil refining, a 3 generations ahead plastic injection molding technology, new products/technologies for defence/security applications & new concept products in LPG/CNG cylinders are some of the major experiences.

Opening the market for a Indian company in USA and subsequently opening the market for current company in SAARC (without Pakistan), New Zealand, Australia, Middle East, Africa are the work done in terms of geographic exposure.

Start Up Business Strategy

Apart from specific strategy experience in terms of entry into India, new product introduction, etc a common challenge is business strategy for start ups. While my experience has been in the field of engineering products, the experience and knowledge is something that can be applied across industries.

Start ups have a promoter/dreamer with a idea/concept/ product itself and they have the full grasp of the same. But this alone is not enough since for the end result the organisation must navigate whole plethora of issues, challenges. Like they say the devil lies in the details. Often these get lost in the dreams/excitement or in translation. Here is where I can help you navigate on the ground what you see from 30,000 feet up in the air. Help bring the challenges to the fore, introduce the elephants in the room so to speak and thus help reduce risk and increase possibility of success in business.

I have had the opportunity to contribute significantly in this area in many of my jobs either due to issues within my company or due to dealing with promoters of companies.

How do you organize your business? How do you stay on top of all the moving parts?

Solutions depend on type, size and scale/complexity of project to be managed.
One secret is to decentralise decision making based on financial implications so that folks on the ground can manage most issues and you can look at the minimum critical parts.
Kick start a project with your entire team and get a buy in on the timelines and make everyone understand that if a timeline is slipping on any activity it must be red flagged in real time as information. No red flag means timelines are being met.
While team will be evaluated on meeting schedules any project is a TEAM WORK including customer and so if a member is evaluated based on slippages then they will not raise the red flags. Team must understand that red flag is to get help and not indicator of their competence.
Schedule regular periodic meetings/conf calls which would be predecided as a schedule for whole duration of project and discuss only status/timeline situation. Any slippages/problems should be taken offline for discussions with specific persons rather than waste everyones time.
For large projects with high complexity there are software like Pro M available which can automate the process greatly.

While these suggestions may sound simplistic truth is that project management falters because all the stakeholders are not on the same page and many tend to get overwhelmed with complex plans where simple plans work.
