MenuHow do I create a commission structure to reduce cancellations in the hotel business?
The guests are already "customers" but can still cancel and the goal is to implement a B2B sales cadence model by calling within 48 hours to offer concierge service to understand the needs of the guest better/upsell services, rich HQ email within 3 days, and HQ letter in the mail with local city guide within 30 days to get the customer within the 14 day non-refundable window and increase customer engagement through attentiveness to guest relation needs.

I think a better question would be to understand why people are cancelling after making a booking?
Are you catering to business travelers whose schedules may change? (no amount of cuddling will save all sales)
Are you catering to vacationers who might find better deals elsewhere? (appeal to their frugality with special non-flexible offers)
Take a page from the airline industry, perhaps simply offer different rates with different options. Cheaper rate is pre-paid and non-cancellable, higher rate has full flexibility.
Then you can more narrowly focus your efforts on cementing the 'flexible bookers' while you've already collected on the more frugal folks.

You don't need a hotel license. You run your business as a lead generator and leverage the licenses this the owner already pays. The dues are already being paid for the rest of the units so you don't need to compensate the owner additionally for the licenses. Good question. I wouldn't be worried about litigation. Your (normal) worst case might be penalties from the OTA, a difficult ongoing relationship with their Market Manager and perhaps listing removals. All independents can find ways to reward their most loyal clientele, without market visibility. Happy to discuss this briefly over a call to share the tricks.MM

We want to launch a new business unit, basically a new service offering to our existing clients. I want to find out more about employee incentives?
Absolutely. And it is easy as your imagination.You can create it to fit your culture. That said, I believe that the biggest incentive is to tie compensation to the profitability of the unit. 1) Be sure to include everyone who touches outcomes. 2) Create a profit share by deciding how much you want to land in the hands of your employees. Be sure to use a net profit and be sure to account for future capitalization and cash flow. (Typically between 5-25%) 3) Divide the profit share by salaries or some other very obvious criteria. In other words, don't make it arbitrary or people will be dis-incentivized. 4) The profit share is always paid to the group, not the individual. 4) Be very involved in teaching net profit creation. They will need business acumen. Lastly, 5) While stock options and employee ownership may be a future goal, a profit share let's people hit the ground running, creates excitement right now, teaches needed business and finance skills and adds a fabulous team culture. Work with your unit to create the options or ownership they want later when they understand the principles and can help design the rules and criteria. I practiced this for over 20 years and the results were phenomenal. People grew the business, put cash in everyone's pocket, created an exciting environment and was in real time, not future time. I don't think the service you are envisioning is a new concept, but it might not exist at scale as a packaged Saas product. If you have not encountered it yet and you are actively looking for it, it could mean that it either does not exist yet or there is a big opportunity to become that authority in that space.
