My background: I've built several products that anonymously allow employees to communicate their concerns which also measure the impact of specific actions or inactions of organizations and leadership.
The biggest negative impact of an organization that isn't very transparent is a lack of trust by employees and often customers. A lack of trust will erode employee engagement amongst top performers.

As Tom has indicated, lack of trust will be the #1 problem whether it is non-transparency towards customers or employees.
From the customer perspective. There is a growing trend in research before buying. Often a customer will want to gather as much information as they can before reaching out to the business for that next step conversation. By providing transparency and information, you build that trust and credibility as a subject matter expert which becomes the basis for business relationships and transactions.
Comparing company A and company B,, A provides tons of information about their services while B simply lists a service offerings on their page. A has moved to build more rapport with the customer and is much more likely in securing that business.

I have done a lot of work on transparency with both non-profits and corporates, especially when related to strategic decisions, bad news, M&A and social media.
Non-transparency implies you're hiding something. In most cases, leaders and managers believe non-transparency gives them an edge in negotiation / makes them more irreplaceable or that it will avoid conflict / problems.
The impact of Non-Transparency include what happens when the truth is discovered. Sometimes before the deal is made, sometimes after.
Other impacts are on the overall atmosphere of the company and relations to other colleagues / business partners / clients: people know there is non-transparency because they know the workplace is not fully transparent. This increases stress, tension, decreases openness of employees, reduces their loyalty, can affect their work ethics, etc.
On the individual who has to conceal the truth, there is also a psychological and physiological impact. If an individual has to hold on to many "non-transparent truths", the physiological impact on the body can lead to chronic pains and illnesses (especially back and eye pains, stomach problems and even heart diseases in the most serious cases).
I do not condemn non-transparency because it can be necessary in specific situations.
The questions you may want to ask yourself are:
1. What is the purpose of non-transparency?
2. What are the alternative solutions to non-transparency?
3. What is the worst that can happen with transparency?
4. What are we worried will actually happen? Why do we think this will happen?
5. What does the ideal situation look like?
6. What do we want to achieve?

What advice do you give to a 16 year old entrepreneur with a start up idea?
First, hat tip to you for being a young entrepreneur. Keep it up! If you have the funds to build out your MVP, hire a developer and possibly a mentor. If your idea is marketable, you don't need to give up equity by bringing in a co-founder. If this is your entrepreneurial venture, I would recommend you do retain a coach to help you see all the things you may not know. Have you already done your SWOT analysis? What would be a good answer for describing the size of your company to a potential prospect who might consider you too small to service their account?
What an awesome question! Businesses are running into this issue more frequently that ever, good news is, it can be done. Having worked on projects with oDesk, Fox Television and Wikipedia and having a very very small staff, it's certainly possible. Here's how I say it in our pitches to larger organizations: "Tractive West provides tailored video production services to organizations of all sizes. We have developed a distributed workflow using the latest digital tools. We leverage our small creative and management team with a world wide network of creative professionals, that means we can rapidly scale to meet the demands of any project while keeping our infrastructure and overhead lightweight and sustainable." How can I make a million dollars?
First, I agree with Chad in that the pure pursuit of money is unlikely to render anything significant. By using a monetary value as a primary goal, you're only diluting the real drivers of success: passion, crafting great customer experiences, building an incredible team and culture etc. That said, making $1m isn't that hard. :) I love this thinking by Amy Hoy and that's how I would go about making $1m: http://unicornfree.com/30x500. Using that logic, this is what I'd do: * To earn $1m in a year, I need to earn +- $80k a month. * To earn $80k a month, I need 1600 customers paying me $50 per month. * So what can I build that could attract 1600 people to pay me $50? * Or, what could I build that could attract 400 people to pay me $200 per month? This logic works on two drivers: * Cumulative revenue and growth. So SaaS works best in this regard, as you only need to focus on having new signups that are greater than your churn. * Building something that people are willing to (really) pay for and going for quality over quantity. If you are building something that sells for $5 pm, you'll need to sell at much higher volumes (which are tricky). In terms of doing that, these are the areas of my business that I would prioritize: 1. Build an awesome team that do things they're passionate about. 2. Prioritize customer experiences above anything else. Do everything in your power (regardless of whether it can't scale) to add value and help your customers. 3. How do you get your first customers for a consulting business?
Back when I started LinkedIn wasn't as huge as it is now. I wish it was. I didn't have a large network and those networking sessions NEVER brought me any clients. I used to go to all sorts of them hoping to get clients. There were a couple of nibbles here and there, but never anything serious. The only thing that helped was reaching out DIRECTLY to people in my target market. That meant cold calls and cold emails. I'd sell myself while thinking about their needs. Once I got a few bites I'd build good rapport by keeping in touch, asking questions, repeating back what they were saying so that they knew I was on the same page and kept my promises. If I said I'd call them back next Tuesday at 2:15 I'd do so. Eventually I built trust with them without having a network, or an insane amount of experience. Oh and the most important thing about consulting is to LISTEN. When those first clients notice that you're truly listening and you're not selling the cookie cutter solutions everyone else is trying to sell them that's when you got them hooked. You start to understand their problems, fears, and see through their eyes and not just yours. A network will help, but in the beginning just good 'ol salesmanship will get the ball rolling.JC
