MenuWhat are low cost advertising platforms/channels to attract qualified consumers for a retail business to a landing page to quickly validate an idea?
My landing page has an email capture form that I quickly change to match different offers. I need not only a low cost advertising channel, but quick execution (unlike adwords).

Can you give any industry specific data? What types of products are you selling?
Depending on a lot of factors you can make Adwords cost efficient. You may not get the volume you want at the margins you want, but go for margins and utilize other channels to reach volume.
Affiliates can be another low cost but effective channel. Affiliate traffic and conversion quality can be great or terrible. You get what you put in and if you manage the affiliates properly you can get good quality conversions at good margins.
I recommend starting with Shareasale. You won't get the highest volume from them, but you'll likely get very good quality if managed properly.
I'm happy to help further if you want to have a call.

If you're in retail and looking for a quick lever to pull to get a high volume of traffic to your site, I'd definitely recommend starting with Facebook ads. They're easy to set up and optimize, and they're image-based, which is extremely helpful in a retail context.
Adwords is far more complex and relies on people searching for certain keywords - meaning you're either paying a lot more for high-volume keywords, or you're trading volume for quality. Not to mention their text-only format - not ideal. Also, in my experience, display ads get pretty dismal click-through rates.
I'd stick with Facebook (and maybe Twitter) as your first move. Let me know if you'd like to discuss further!
I'd set up Facebook ads because of their robust ad targeting platform so that you can laser focus your targeting which will keep your ad spend to a minimum. Then, I'd use those ads to drive traffic to different landing pages with different offers to see who's responding to what. Then, I'd have each of those landing pages integrated with a different email list in your email provider (aWeber, MailChimp, etc.). I prefer aWeber because I use a tool called AWProTools which offers a lot of features that aren't included in any of the other email platforms. Then, I'd set up autoresponder series in each of the email lists that are specific to whatever type of offer was being presented in each landing page. You can build out your entire sales funnel like this and then just let it run on autopilot.
I would suggest looking at Facebook Ads as you can determine within a few days if the idea is right or not. As long as you are targeting the right audiences which you think are suitable you could be up and running in no time!
Newspapers traditionally have charged per column inch for display ads. Newspapers today are trying many different types of ad rates, including flat fees and combined deals for both print and online ads. To advertise you will need to contact your local newspaper and ask for their rate card. A relatively cheap advertising idea is newspaper classifieds. Newspapers typically charge for classifieds based on the size of the classified, the number of days the ad runs, and the type of classified. Many newspapers today have self-serve online dashboards where you can compose your classified ad and pay with a credit card. Depending on the kind of business and the size of the newspaper readership, you might be able to place a classified ad starting for only a bit more than $5 a day. Radio advertising can be considered one of the cheap ways to advertise, but you have to shop carefully. Radio advertising is often sold based on a “4-week total rate”. You pay based on the size of the audience reached. To reach a market with 1 million people, a typical radio show ad budget range might be $12,000. In a larger market of 5 million people, a 4-week total rate budget might be $60,000. In local TV, figure to pay starting at around $5 for every 1,000 viewers in a medium-sized market, for a 30-second ad slot. According to Skyworks Marketing, that’s a low-end rate. National TV ads cost much more and would be completely out of the reach of small businesses. With TV ads, also budget for the production cost.

My CPA cost on PPC channels has sky-rocketed 120% this year, I suspect a competitor has launched a campaign to drive up my CPA costs. See details..
Assuming this is a search campaign, you should be able to see if any new competitors are regularly showing for your keywords. I would also investigate if CPCs have changed (or just conversion rate), how your impression share has changed, and how your average position has changed. If their campaigns are profitable, they will probably continue to run them. Your best bet in the meantime is to optimize your CPC, CTR (helps with CPCs), and conversion rate. You have the history and experience, which should be to your advantage against a new competitor.FP

What are guidelines for creating a 90 second marketing video about a new software product?
I am a firm believer in hiring professionals to do a professional job. We have worked with dozens of freelance videographers and helped brands achieve some sharp marketing videos. So some tips: 1) Hire a freelance videographer and writing team. Developing a story board is not easy and there are brilliant writers just waiting for jobs like this. 2) If you are going the DIY route make sure there is a beginning, a middle and an end to your story board. 3) Use humour where possible. 4) Keep the script short and attempt to get your message out in the first 30 seconds. 5)Speak directly to the audience -so know really well who that audience is! 6) Find the right tone depending on your company brand and mission. 7) Tell a solid story. So you want to start by presenting a problem, introducing a solution, then explain how it works, and lastly create a call to action for your target audience. Hope this helps. I'm here if you'd have further questions. blue skies, Daniela Hope this helpsDK

Is there a way to use paid advertising to test a domain name?
Yes. Use the "Link Text" in your facebook ads to A/B test various domain names. To do this, simply launch a few identical ads, and only change the link text to say the variation of the domain name you are considering. The ad with the highest CTR (not conversion rate or other KPI) will be the one that sparks the most interest in your target audience. Note: one domain may have a high relevance to one audience, but low relevance with another. So this tactic should only be used if you have a very specific demo you are targeting.AG

What offers can attract advertisers to my website?
(Background: I founded the largest marketplace for direct ad sales. Powers sites like Microsoft, Aol, Gawker, etc) If you want to sell ads directly to advertisers... that's awesome, but recognize it takes more work than just dropping AdSense on your site. I'm glad you're thinking of it like "how can I attract advertisers (customers) to do business with me?" I personally don't think gimmicks work well in the long run. It's all about the fundamentals. You are essentially a business (the website) that sells a product (the ad space / ability to reach your audience) to customers (the advertisers). All the normal fundamentals apply - you have to attract potential customers, sell them on your product, close the business, get repeat business, etc. So while a gimmick may work to get someones attention, if their experience of doing business with you is terrible they won't buy or won't come back. We believe the best way to attract, close and keep advertisers is to make your "products" as easy to find and purchase as possible. In the direct ad space, it is way too complicated - often requiring lots of emails and manual effort. Plus they have to find you to begin with. Some actionable stuff for you to do: * Do some customer validation. If you want to sell a product (the ad space), how do you know there is a market? Have you talked to potential advertisers about this? Do you have any pre-committed deals? Do your similar competitors do direct sales successfully? * Have a .com/advertise page and promote it well. You have to let people know you're open for business. Make it easy for people to find it. * Have a system that makes it easy to place/execute/manage actual ad orders. This is what we do at www.isocket.com. There are other tools for various needs, website sizes, costs, etc.JR

How many number of users does it take to reach critical mass for ad sales?
Source: I founded www.buyads.com and www.isocket.com, which powers the direct ad sales for the web's best sites (like TechCrunch, AOL, Microsoft, etc) We hand invited the publishers that join our market because, as your question suggests, there is some threshold between who should and should not try direct sales. There are no hard rules, just guidelines. The superseding one is this: Do you have inventory (audience) an advertiser would take the time to specifically work with you for? If you open a "store" and starting selling this stuff, do people want to buy it? One measure is traffic, but that's not enough. In general we like to look for sites with 100,000 page views a month or more. But it can depend on the content and vertical. For example, we power a website that gets 25k hits a month but is the only site covering the voice over talent industry in Hollywood - so its super nichey and there is a market for those advertisers. Other examples of small but successful premium properties include some hyperlocal ones (www.queensmamas.com, www.brooklynheightsblog.com, www.brokelyn.com, etc), the largest blog for truckers, largest blog for prison wardens, etc. The conflicting examples are sites with large traffic but bad audiences/verticals. We reject a lot of "tech blog" also-rans that just copy and paste content from TechCrunch but get a lot of SEO traffic from it. Or even if it's a legit site, it can be in a bad brand-advertiser vertical like home finance / mortgages (which is mostly lead gen advertisers)JR
