MenuIs there a way to use paid advertising to test a domain name?
If so what traffic sources should I use? Facebook ads? Google adwords? I read Tim Ferris used google adwords to test the title of his book. But I know now you cannot use it anymore. What can you use instead?

Use the "Link Text" in your facebook ads to A/B test various domain names.
To do this, simply launch a few identical ads, and only change the link text to say the variation of the domain name you are considering.
The ad with the highest CTR (not conversion rate or other KPI) will be the one that sparks the most interest in your target audience.
Note: one domain may have a high relevance to one audience, but low relevance with another. So this tactic should only be used if you have a very specific demo you are targeting.
The importance of domains names has diminished significantly and will likely continue to do so. Buy whatever is available with the fewest words, that is the easiest to spell. Or put another way, has less likelihood of being misspelled.
An easy and free way to test the popularity of specific keywords is to use google.com/trends. You can enter up to 5 keywords at a time and compare search interest in them over time. Then you could select a domain name based on the most popular keyword available as a domain name.
I am not sure what you mean by testing a domain name... I am assuming you want to see if one brand name works better than another... considering the cost of buying a domain name is less than $10 a year, I would just buy the ones you are interested in and try promoting both with adwords...
In general it is a violation of google's TOS if you dont have added value content on your site... so I wouldn't advertise it on google if you are just testing a domain name... I would make sure to have actual content and a functioning website...

Ordinarily, I try to avoid explicitly contradicting other experts on Clarity.fm. However, some of the comments above are preposterously incorrect. Tom Williams and David Melamed are probably very knowledgeable in their chosen fields. However, based on their remarks here, it's quite clear that they're comparatively inexperienced with domains.

Has social media obliterated the importance of domains? OK. Then why did the founder of Facebook pay $75,000 for the domain name Internet.org last August? Sales of that size happen almost weekly. Or has Google condemned domains to worthlessness? OK. Then why is Google itself now competing for the privilege of running a fleet of new domain extensions such as .WEB?
And the other problematic statement: " ... considering the cost of buying a domain name is less than $10 a year ... " Which domain is that? Here is a list of last week's reported sales:

To those 2 experts I'm disagreeing with, it's nothing personal. However, the statements above are grossly mistaken; and it's important to point that out.
In answer to the original question: Yes, there are a few ways to use paid advertising to test a domain. A/B testing in this area is actually an underutilized but important ingredient in SEM. You should test the domains using whichever PPC channel you're planning to advertise in -- whether that's AdWords or something else.
While I would advise such an approach for extending your SEM dollar, I probably wouldn't advocate paid advertising as a test to choose a domain in the first place. Unless the intended domain were a 6 or 7-figure purchase, it would simply be too expensive to run a test like this long enough to gather statistically significant data.

Hi First of all, the fact that you are talking about market research ('validation') is great. I've seen so many startups invest time and money, only to find out later that no ones wants/needs their product, or that they only want a certain aspect of it (whilst the startup spent money developing a whole bunch of other features), or that they aren't willing to pay the requested price. So you're already one step ahead. Also, the sooner you validate your product, the better! The best ways to validate your idea is to see whether people are willing to actually pay for your product/service. The best way to get investors, is to show (1) that you are solving a need, (2) that you have traction, and (3) that the investors will get a nice return on their investment. As for methods of validation, here are the most efficient methods. 1. Check that people will actually buy/pay for the product. You can do this by setting up a Wix or Wordpress website (this can be done for free / very low costs). If your venture is a mobile app, then you can create what’s called a Clickable Prototype (“CP”) (a visual of the app in which the images change when you click on something - you can do so using the Apple Keynote tool or Microsoft PowerPoint). On the website, include the price of the product/service, and enable people to order it (YES, even if it doesn't really exist yet!). I am happy to explain how this can be done whilst still being fair to your potential customers (the people who click the "buy/download” button). 2. Determine your target market/customers. 3. Spend a small amount (say $100 - depending on your budget) on the most relevant platforms and promote your product/service - linking to the website that you created. This way, after only spending a very small amount, you will be able to know (if you did it right): a. Do people like your product. b. Do people want/need your product (not the same as 'a'). c. Are people willing to pay for your product? (not the same as 'b' - and this being the most important stage) d. How much they are willing to pay. (you can check this by having 2-3 landing pages with different prices on each). 2 last important points: a) In order to rule out external factors like an unattractive landing page or advertising campaign, and assuming you have the time, create multiple landing pages / advertising campaigns, with different designs. b) During the above process, don't forget to check how much it costs you for each user/customer that clicks the "buy" button. If for example each click on your promotion/advertisement costs you $2, and only every 10 people who click go on to the "buy" page - that means each sale is costing you $20. Then check what your average profit per sale is, and then you'll know if your service/product is worth pursuing (obviously there are additional factors like return customers, referrals etc, but you will get a good estimated/validation of the idea/business). Regarding questionnaires and talking with people, these methods are also very good, but it is crucial that you implement them correctly, otherwise your results might be misleading. Total Addressable (at least in the US) can be built based on market data sets, both free and for fee. For early child care centers, Market Data Retrieval and NCES (publicly available data set) are two recommended sources. For Serviceable, that depends on a) your own business / operating model and b) the current and projected penetration of comparable competitors in market. For the former, consider things like technology usage and implementation capabilities. For the latter, if you have identified clear competitors, it is unlikely that you will have access to accurate info. So, if you can estimate these numbers and reverse-engineer, that's a good starting point. This would also be a great time to consider how your SAAS product is differentiated and will give you a chance to think through different scenario models for customer "switching" (from an existing competitor product to your own).DS

Maybe hire a freelance market researcher to find out? ;) Generally, something like this is going to appeal to fortune 500 companies. Smaller companies and entrepreneurs are going to be doing market research themselves. From the question it is difficult to tell if you have come into possession of such a platform, or are thinking about building one. Regardless, to succeed it's crucial that you deeply understand who your target customer is and what pain you are solving for them. Most ideas for a business stem from the entrepreneur's discovery of a solution to a problem for a certain group of people. Since who has the greatest need is unclear to you at the moment, the best thing to do might be to contact people at companies who you think have the greatest need. Find a way to get in touch with someone at the company involved in hiring market researchers, and ask them what challenges they face. How many number of users does it take to reach critical mass for ad sales?
Source: I founded www.buyads.com and www.isocket.com, which powers the direct ad sales for the web's best sites (like TechCrunch, AOL, Microsoft, etc) We hand invited the publishers that join our market because, as your question suggests, there is some threshold between who should and should not try direct sales. There are no hard rules, just guidelines. The superseding one is this: Do you have inventory (audience) an advertiser would take the time to specifically work with you for? If you open a "store" and starting selling this stuff, do people want to buy it? One measure is traffic, but that's not enough. In general we like to look for sites with 100,000 page views a month or more. But it can depend on the content and vertical. For example, we power a website that gets 25k hits a month but is the only site covering the voice over talent industry in Hollywood - so its super nichey and there is a market for those advertisers. Other examples of small but successful premium properties include some hyperlocal ones (www.queensmamas.com, www.brooklynheightsblog.com, www.brokelyn.com, etc), the largest blog for truckers, largest blog for prison wardens, etc. The conflicting examples are sites with large traffic but bad audiences/verticals. We reject a lot of "tech blog" also-rans that just copy and paste content from TechCrunch but get a lot of SEO traffic from it. Or even if it's a legit site, it can be in a bad brand-advertiser vertical like home finance / mortgages (which is mostly lead gen advertisers)JR
