MenuI just started an ad tech company out in Palo Alto. Would love to start getting some PR/exposure. How do I get journalists to write about us?

With 17+ years in PR, and my work as chair/co-chair with the MIT Enterprise Forum in Chicago, let me add to what has already been said.
You have two industries (aka targets) to approach - technology & advertising. Try to include a demo video in your media pitch/kit.
Create and tell a story to reporters as to why you created your startup. What need did you see? Is it from personal experience in the ad industry? Something you experienced that was a real pain. Something that you said to self "there has got to be a better way."
Find out from your financiers who they have funded and then research to find out which reporters wrote about those companies. I would also suggest putting out a press release. PR Web is relatively cheap, and can help with SEO. If you need a media list I also have a suggestion. Feel free to contact me.
What sets you apart? Build a compelling kit around this information and/or hire a pro to do the same. Then it's pitch time / relationship time. Reach out to me for more.
First, you'll want to build a media list to contact. Careful research will help you develop a targeted list of reporters who would be most interested in hearing about your company. Once you have your media list in hand, the key is creating the right pitch to contact them with and knowing how to approach them properly. Get a bunch of your craziest wackiest friends over one night.. Get into your favorite bottle of spirits.. Bring out a white-board and ask a single questions to be answered by the end of the night:
What can we do with our product/service that will be so entertaining and memorable that at the very sight of it, people can't help but to talk about it... (Think - Jean Claude Van Dam - Volvo stunt) Or (West jets christmas giving video) there are endless examples of demonstrations of product services that the media would love.. Believe it or not, when you are having the most fun, are the most carefree is when you are most creative... (Hence the spirits- teeheee) Anyhow, when you finish the brainstorm.. which should be probably after a bottle or two.. you'll have everything you need to have a story.. You just have to trust you gut and pick the most amazing, fun, enjoyable, example of your best product/service demo, and you better believe if you can't wait to show people... They can't wait to show it to others.. that's how you become.. Newsworthy....

You have received good advice but I would also ask what is the goal of your PR efforts? Is it to drive awareness, gain leads, etc? Before beginning your outreach it's important to understand what you want to accomplish. This in turn will help you to craft outreach that matches your goals. You get journalists to write about you by telling them succinctly why they should care. Why would they and by extension their readers care about your story? Go beyond gathering target publications and names to understanding those you are targeting. Get to know them and not only their beat but their preferences. In addition, don't limit your outreach to trying to get journalists to write about you, offer content. Bylined articles are a wonderful way to establish thought leadership.

It also greatly depends on "why" do you want the publicity. There are tools to become visible for investors, there are networks to attract board members etc At last but not least - there are networks and tools to get partners and buyers/licensees. Happy to discuss.EB

Should I find a new brand name?
You're definitely going the wrong direction. That's my opinion. But I'm right, and here's why: Your domain strategy is hyper-extended. You've got 4 domains in .CO.UK – hopefully 8 counting .UK rights. That's all well and good for a British audience. But you deliver work online; so why not appeal to a global audience? Here in the USA, ccTLDs (a.k.a. country codes) are not recognized. Your business will look strange and be misremembered as .COM. That means your marketing will be inefficient; you'll leak traffic to Google, parked PPC pages, or even competitors who develop sites with the same brand name(s) in the same niche! Meanwhile you'll pay extra in ongoing advertising costs to compensate. And you don't own the 4 corresponding .COM domains. I checked. They're owned by a pair of people / companies – both known to me already. To acquire these 4 matching domains, you'd need to spend about $10,000. That's based on the typical list prices these guys set, which you can verify, I'm sure. On top of this, you'd face brand protection issues for at least 4 distinct names. That obligates you to further domain purchases or risks ... in proportion to the number of brand names you're attempting to operate. After all, WantApp is confusingly similar to WantApps; and WantWebsite resembles WantAWebsite. And let's not forget .DESIGN and .WEBSITE, which means your WantDesign.co.uk is competing against both WantDesign.com and Want.Design, while your WantWebsite.co.uk has to shout extra-loud to be heard above WantWebsite.com and Want.Website. Things get complicated fast! You'd eventually face competitors with these names unless you bought them all. You might even get embroiled in trademark disputes, which are no fun. For that amount of money ($10k upwards), you can buy a really great domain name and consolidate all your efforts on a single brand name with worldwide appeal and a single website. In the long run, going the way you're going, you will pay thousands of pounds one way or another. Maybe you won't buy those other domains, but you will put extra cash, sweat, and time into marketing. You'd probably lose a few customers over the years as well, since they'd go somewhere other than your site and find other people to hire. I also have concerns about branding with multiple domains, managing multiple websites, or asking customers to bounce around between several sites. But there's no space to go into that. The domain issues already sank your battleship, I'm afraid. If you'd like help selecting a single unified brand name for all your services – which is what I recommend – let's talk. Forget books, if you want to understand CSR just go online and read about case studies of CSR nightmares and read content from those who hate corporations. This will tell you both the problems and results of bad CSR. The solutions will be obvious.RQ

Can anyone recommend the best PR company servicing start up's in the USA (SF/NY Area)?
There are a handful of great PR agencies for mobile consumer apps in SF & NY but for a consumer launch, a great PR agency isn't sufficient to garner widespread coverage. With so much actual product awareness for new apps being driven by Twitter (and to a lesser extent Facebook), traditional PR is insufficient unless the right people are also talking about it the day of launch. Look at Jelly's launch yesterday for a launch done right (at least from a marketing perspective). With no disrespect meant to PR firms, I really think that spending the kind of dollars they charge for launching most apps is a waste of money. I think with a good directed outreach by you as CEO, you can get enough influencers talking about your product, providing of course, it lives up to the promises. I think a PR outreach should really be invested in as the app scales, when the kinks have been worked-out, and when there is already a certain amount of buzz. But expecting that the first buzz will be ignited by PR firms is a risky bet.TW

What is a good scope of work for a marketing and PR department?
Build a body of work in the form of a blog. Much depends on the size and scope of your company, but branded journalism can really make a huge difference.....AW
