MenuWhat is Google Adwords and is it beneficial?
This question has no further details.
Answers
Here's a good explanation of what AdWords is:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/adwords.html
Beneficial? Yes, but only when the time is taken to understand how it works and the importance of using the right keywords and phrases in respect to the available budget. I've seen too many companies go through money very quickly by bidding high on very general terms.
It is good but you have to run balanced keywords based campaigns only
AdWords (and paid search, more broadly) can be an extremely beneficial source of traffic and customers for businesses. Paid search is still the only advertising medium where the customer initiates the action to see an advertisement. Because of this, if you offer a service the customer is looking for and have tight alignment between keyword selection, ad copy matching, landing page experience, and compelling offer, you can have great success.
I've been managing paid search accounts for over 6 years now and if you have any specific questions feel free to reach out!
Google AdWords lets you bid on keywords (rather than ranking for them, as with SEO) to appear on the Search Engine Results Page. You create ads and set targeting, and then you're entered into an auction with other advertisers who are also trying to show their ads.
I've been running AdWords for more than a decade, and I'll say - it's not for everyone. I have clients that are getting $1MM+ in revenue from their small AdWords program, and I've managed other clients where it would probably be a better business decision to stop marketing until they fix their funnels and landing pages.
If you're set up to grow your business online and you've got a good site or process to accomplish that, then using Google AdWords can be a very profitable way to get targeted visitors who are ready to buy from you.
Google AdWords is a PPC ad framework that businesses use to drive traffic to their websites and offers.
PPC stands for "pay-per-click". This means that, instead of paying a flat fee to have your ad displayed in a certain place for a certain amount of time, you pay each time someone clicks on your ad.
AdWords works by letting you select Google search keywords that you want to target. For example, if I want to advertise a family law firm in Houston, I could set it so that my ads display whenever someone goes to Google and searches for "Houston family law".
AdWords works on a bidding model: instead of charging a flat fee for all clicks, AdWords lets marketers bid to display different ads.
Is AdWords beneficial? It is beneficial in that it allows you to spend money today and get sales today. It is immediate and very responsive, and if you know what you are doing, you can definitely turn a profit.
There are, of course, other PPC frameworks you could use instead of AdWords. Bing, for example, offers a similar service, and bid prices tend to be cheaper. The main drawback is that, since Bing is not used as much as Google, your market potential is much smaller.
Facebook also runs PPC ads. The framework is very different, however: instead of targeting people based on what they are searching for right now, you target people based on personal details such as age, sex, place of residence, family situation, career status, and interests. Other social media platforms such as Twitter also offer PPC options, though their frameworks are not as extensive.
For some businesses, search-engine-based PPC works better. For others, social-media-based PPC works better.
One thing to note, though, is that, no matter which framework you use, PPC is expensive. It is more expensive than other types of digital marketing, such as SEO, email marketing, and influencer marketing.
SEO (search engine optimization) is the act of creating content and structuring your website in such a way that your website will come up in the organic search engine results for relevant keywords without you needing to pay the search engine. Its advantage is that it is extremely efficient. Its disadvantage is that it is not responsive: it usually takes about six months for an SEO campaign to have an effect, and if your business model changes, it will take time for your SEO strategy to adapt and produce results again.
Email marketing is the most efficient type of digital marketing, and it is highly responsive. You can get results immediately. The problem is that you need a list. And no, you CANNOT JUST BUY A LIST! Those days are gone. In order to obtain a list, you have to invest in other aspects of digital marketing first.
Influencer marketing is when you pay a YouTube or Instagram personality to pitch your offering. This can be a highly effective method of marketing, but it requires a high level of creativity, and you have to make sure that you pick the right influencer, someone with an audience demographic that fits what you are selling. Dealing with influencers can also be a pain (sometimes).

SEO: Subdomain or subdirectory for blog?
Google's official stance is that they are "roughly equivalent" and recommends to do what is technically simpler to implement (source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MswMYk05tk). With that said, I'd recommend a directory over a subdomain. Doing this consolidates signals to a single domain, which should then theoretically build more authority for all pages off of that single domain. This consolidation of authority results in rank increases, which have been documented here: http://moz.com/community/q/moz-s-official-stance-on-subdomain-vs-subfolder-does-it-need-updating. A subdomain would split signals from the blog and the rest of the root domain content. So while Google "says" they're roughly equivalent, SEOs have seen tangible evidence that sticking to a single domain can be beneficial. If you're able to go with www.iconery.com/editorial/, I'd choose that. Hope this helps!KR

Will redesigning a website (ground up) ruin the search ranking of a site?
TL;DR -> Yes you will risk it if you don't perform a proper audit and migration from the original platform. Any type of architecture changes can 100% ruin your SEO if you are not migrating content and topics correctly. Many people assume this is limited to URI structure but underestimate the power of Topical hierarchy and the content, internal linking and URI structure which play a crucial role into any migration effort. If you have any questions about the migration process, give me a shout. Decent free migration checklist: https://searchengineland.com/site-migration-seo-checklist-dont-lose-traffic-286880TM

Is it possible to increase my site's SEO by getting blogs/other websites to provide back links to my site?
If you got 5000 sites to link to your site using the same keyword you'll likely be flagged for spam and attempting to manipulate the search results. That is an old-school attempt at SEOing a site that Google and the other search engines have already developed algorithmic answers to. There are three aspects to building up your search rankings. 1) On-Site Optimization: Your site has to be coded in a way that is search and mobile friendly. You need to optimize your content for searcher's topical interest's (keywords), and give your visitors a great on-site experience by focusing on usability issues. 2) Content: You need to create and publish awesome content that fills the needs of the audience you're trying to reach. Write blog posts and create other forms of content that answer questions, provide tips, and map out solutions that truly illustrate that you are an authority on the topic. 3) Social Engagement / Links: Links are an important part of the algorithm, but getting a bunch of sites to link to you using keywords is the wrong approach. You need to be engaging on social media and (to a far lesser extent) socializing your content above. But the more you engage, the more others will socialize your content for you, which is where authority is really built.SD

What is a reasonable price for SEO services?
The cost of SEO depends a great deal on three things: 1) The specific services being offered (SEO, social media, content strategy, etc.) 2) The degree in which those services will be implemented (how many hours per month) 3) the skill and experience level of the SEOs involved. $800/month is a pretty small investment if you consider all the layers to making a web marketing campaign successful. My company will usually not touch any fully-managed web marketing campaign for less than $1500/month and that's at the low end of the aggressiveness meter even for a pretty basic site. A larger ecommerce site might start around $5K and go up from there. Overall, you want to look for value and results. You'll want to know how long the SEO has been in business and when looking at proposals you need to understand the amount of time the company will be investing in the campaign. You also want to spell out your goals and establish the expectations on how/when those goals will be achieved. When the SEO and client don't have the same expectations, that can lead to issues later on. But if you know what the goals are you can both be on the same page from the start.SD
