Ask what sales & marketing books they read in the last month. Those who are constantly trying to excel at the field will always be self-educating. Those who are outdated will sit on their laurels and quote marketing reports at you from so-called experts like Gartner. They'll converse like a Forbes article. 2. Ask how much revenue they've generated with their own two hands. Red flag for people saying their "team" generated the revenue. Probe to check if the advisor is a hand-waver who inherited a high-performing team and knows little about the real details. 3. Real marketers make real money. Red flag if the marketer can't tell you how much revenue they've generated. That means they don't know how to track their marketing efforts properly to get the highest ROI. Marketers must have that skill or else they're like a basketball player who can't dribble. 4. Read the person's LinkedIn recommendations and ignore follower counts and LinkedIn connection counts. Recommendations are harder to fake. 5. Pick advisors who care. If you don't, you'll be treated like a number. I recommend picking me.
