My lighting expertise developed through the years, sometimes as a separate business, in Philips Lighting, other times was part of complex businesses - energy saving, sustainability, construction, building management. I studied, experienced and believe in the psychological and biological effect of the Lighting, not only in the visual effect, decorative effect or cosines. I have my own study for Dubai Airport, for how jet lag can be healed with Human centric lighting.

In my latest big job, I was assigned to plan, implement and execute a development of Company, which essentially was in trade only, towards Project business. The Company is situated in U.A.E. and the core of business is Lighting, electrical, controls and decorative products.
I planned created the new structure, appointed and trained the new employees for the roles planned. One of my most important tasks was to establish processes – information flow, constant knowledge acquisition; market research, potential customers database building, communication to market, customer relations; products and suppliers relations development; bonus system, sales targets; project estimation, ROI analysis & acquisition; installation, commissioning & completion; warranty services.
Thus, the Company is involved already and executes complex high end Projects, to renowned customers in UAE.

What is a good scope of work for a marketing and PR department?

I suppose, the time you appoint the employees of those departments, you check carefully that they know the theory and have some experience. So, presumably they know what and how to do. Now come the big issue of the proper structuring, organization, motivating, etc.
I would propose the following - you put a screen in their room, showing:
- weekly sales target
- up-to-date results
- monthly target
- percentage done
- marketing and PR budget cost
- up-to-date spent
And leave them decide how to work and what to do.

What advice do you give to a 16 year old entrepreneur with a start up idea?

To have a burning heart for entrepreneurship is a great thing. But you would miss the two other element of success - enough knowledge and enough experience. I propose, in order you continue to feed your fire, you continue to read and try on the technological part of the business. Those are changing so quickly, you have to understand where it all comes and where it goes. Simple money-making story, will destroy the great idea of any great business.

How do you get your first customers for a consulting business?

It is about whether one has a talent for this job. One has first to try unpaid activities, to your family and close circle of friends. If it works, try to enlarge your ground, until gets to paid activities.
If no talent for that, better go for engineering or management activities.

Why do certain people effortlessly raise large amounts of money to start a business, while other people struggle and wait for years?

This a topic I love to talk about. In general, I believe, everybody has her/his own history, knowledge, experience, talents, etc. I personally have many things done unsuccessfully and many others - successfully. When analyzing afterward, it seems that when unsuccessful, this was not my strength. Possibly I was influenced and wrongly excited by something or somebody, that is not for me. Many people love to read how Apple went up, or Microsoft, or Napoleon. But I am an individual, only one of the sort in the world. Others look like me, talk like me, but just partly.
In short, everybody must discover, what is her/his strength and talents and to put much effort to develop. As it is said - success is 1 % talent and 99 % of work. But all 2 parts must be presented.

How do I decide if I should hire a business manager who expects a salary package much higher than our current employees without creating issues?

I had in my business life several cases when my supervisor being neglectful, caused my inferiors to know my salary. It was more than 3 times, happened to me. In one case my relations with my colleague were so destroyed, those problems continued for 2 years and finally, we split. So, I know how important is to keep the salary level in the drawer, but not shown to the public. If not possible to make accounting silent on the matter, maybe you can outsource his payroll to another company and just pay commission for that service, to that company.

What is the best way to retain the manager level employees in a small organization?

What is Manager ? A person who likes (or used to) to assign, control, supervise, investigate, sits in meetings, etc. I have this experience in big international companies, managers spend most of the time with internal issues - human resources, inter-departmental ones, processes & procedures, reporting to higher levels, preparations for exhibitions, speeches, and so on.
In small organization, that energy, knowledge, time, vigor, can be utilized by use those, directing to the market mostly. Human resource issues will be much less; inter-departmental issues will be transformed to fight with competition; reporting and meetings will be transferred to marketing research and approaches.
And also in big companies, people stay if not anonymous behind the big brand, at least in shadow. In small companies, the name of the person is more visible on the market. I mean for example " GE Corporation gets 20 % market share under management of Mr. John - to - Mr. John's Company gets 20 % market share".

How do I start a successful business for a beginner with a low budget? Buying wholesale then reselling? What products to start with and where to sell?

Whatever you do, first ask yourself "what are my strengths". Do not just follow some friends which do good money on this or that. Everybody has his / her own strengths and talents.
If it is ok with trade, then you have to do marketing research:
- which product
- target group
- market price
- production cost
Do this for all products you have in mind. It is difficult but worth.
The difference between the market price and production cost will tell you whether to go or shift to another.

What is the ideal percentage of revenue you should apply to a marketing budget for a new business?

Start with market research first for your type of products and services. Check with similar products, replacement ones, etc. Market prices are the most important. You should know your cost prices of course.
Make P&L calculation, checking with different quantities and leaving certain money for marketing. At the end you will have several options. This puzzle will help you to decide which one is the feasible, and go for it. Do not take unnecessary risk, but look for revenue always.

How to create an interest of your product for your target market?

On-line promoting of your site, will bring to you many PR specialists, some sales guys, and similar of the sort.
Best way is to investigate and find the real solar professionals, those are tough guys, they talk about wattages and voltages, about USD and square foot of land or house roof. Sometimes they are not much friendly, but are in the core of the business.

Amazing, how similar are people and situations around the globe !
Try also other options. For example, I witnessed very high level of respect to US citizens (provided you are with US passport) in the Middle East (GCC countries) and South Asia. If you can be adviser, development manager, engineer, special technology guru, may be that would help. There are also Aid organization hiring for humanitarian jobs for Africa and Asia, with special technical or office knowledge.
