I would love to help you with this please feel free to book a call with me and I will collaborate with you to build your network. To fully help you I would need to better understand your goals and the network you need built. Just having connections is not a valuable network. Your network is only as strong as the trust you have built within it.
I would consider my network very strong. I built it over thirty years and there are about two dozen connections I know I can go to and get trusted results if needed. Each of those connections has trusted connections and so forth.
I would focus on value versus volume. Trust is built by keeping your say do equation 1 to 1. With too many connections its impossible to manage and trust wanes. Money flows on trust.
The most valuable thing for me in my industry are the relationships and trust I have built over 30 years. I have helped connections reach their goals and make more money. When I call they pick up the phone and listen.
If you are looking at creating a more passive network I have found that short videos that bring a lot of value to the subject matter and create a great following. Using LinkedIn to connect to you YouTube or TickTock will help reinforce your brand and build credibility.
Great job on recognizing that networking is important. It's the fine details and maximizing that network that I could help you with.
Make it a great day!
David
The most important thing is to build meaningful relationships rather than have a lot of connections. Your 'connection' on LinkedIn may pass you by in real life without recognising you. Meaningful relationships always convert - one day or another. To build meaningful relationships, just show a sincere interest in a person and listen.
If you are looking for the ways to manage your network online, some tips:
- review who you follow on LinkedIn. If you will see the relevant content from relevant people - it will be easier to engage with them by liking, reposting, commenting their posts
- write posts with some useful information (reviews, small researches) and tag companies, people you want to engage with.
the best hack in networking is NOT TO SELL YOUR BUSINESS rather ask another person how you could help him or her and how you can add value to their businesses

Is it possible to make valuable professional connections online?
Here's your big challenge. The movers + shakers are busy working, so likely you'll only have people on your site which... aren't working... aren't movers + shakers... have free time to network... The best way I've found to make connections with great people is to contact them about an interview. So change your site slightly to a Podcast where you interview movers + shakers. Call up a niche player + ask them to divulge all their secrets, likely you'll hear uncontrolled laughter followed by a click + dial tone. Call up a niche player + ask to interview them + they'll likely tell you all their secrets. It's all a matter of how you position yourself. On a side note, I've contacted authors of books I've read + enjoyed... just out of the blue + asked if there might be some way I can assist them... as a thank you for their great book. This has netted me an impressive Rolodex (that term dates me) of people in the business stratosphere. Another trick I've used to meet people, is to track where they'll be speaking, then submit a speaker proposal to the same event. Then I can end up in the green room with them + make a connection.DF

What is the difference between your team and a network and how should they be treated differently?
In my companies I define a team as my in house leadership (I refer to them in all group communications as the LT or Leadership Team). My Personal Network is the collection of contacts and connections that I use to develop my business (Either through mentorship, advice or social/business connections) Our Company Network is our collective group of contacts and connections shared by the Leadership Team.JB

How can I make a networking strategy for 2018?
The best networking is slow-cooked, not microwaved. Find events where you can have some kind of regular presence. Got nothing to lose by going to one-time events as they're good practice for meeting people, but you won't really cultivate long-term professional relationships that way. It takes time which relies on that regularity aspect. Build trust and don't look at networking as a transactional thing.RP

How do I expand my network with people who are MORE influential than I am? I'm looking for tips and tricks to do this online (with LinkedIn, etc)
I've done a lot of work in this space (created the new art of conference network: Hashtags to handshakes). Here are a few thoughts for you: -get clear on you goal(s) and the type of people who can help you. -take inventory of what you have to offer(use this acronym Work history, Hobbies, Education, Network) -once you see the people you want to connect with, do the online research to see if you already have something or someone in common(LinkedIn). -read and comment on their content or something in their profile. -Invite them to 15min virtual coffee as an introduction call. (Be in a "how can I be of assistant mindset) -ask them two question during your virtual coffee (1. What are you working on that you're most passionate about? 2. What the biggest challenge?). Once you know someone's challenge you can find ways to be helpful. -Be patient. -let me know if you need more support ;)MA
