MenuHow to properly evaluate a database of 50,000 customers of an e-commerce B2C/B2B store? $10/customer, less, more?
We are approached by angel investor who wants equity in exchange for services. We have 50% B2C / B2B , some of our customers return to buy widgets, usually in 6-24 months cycle. Avg. sale is $120, product price ranges from $10 to $5000. Need advice / ballpark number to properly evaluate our business. Or at least please direct me where to read about it, thanks!

Basically you're extrapolating future sales that you expect will come from these 50,000 customers. So it's really a question of assumptions + existing data.
Knowing the average sale amount of $120 is nice, but it's really inadequate. How saturated are those customers in terms of ongoing purchases from you? Will they return? Will they respond to upsells or bring their social networks with them? Will the future behave like the past?
"Some customers return to buy widgets". How many customers and which? Which widgets at what cost? You mention a 6-24 month cycle and a $10 to $5000 price range. But there's a huge difference between someone buying a $5000 product every 6 months and someone buying a $10 product every 2 years.
I'd advise against any quantitative measure that simply gives you a handy single number. The topic ought to framed in terms of a range of possible outcomes with margins of error ... as a probabilistic confidence interval. X% chance that values will fall within range Y to Z, in other words.
Undoubtedly, business gurus have their thumb rules, which I'm not familiar with. My background is in mathematical modeling and database architecture; so I can only say how I'd tackle a financial forecast. Those assumptions really depend not only on your data but on an interpretation of your business model and speculation about customer psychology.
Long story short, avoid the "ballpark number" you think you want – at least, if having a reliable number matters.
A. What services is investor bringing?
B. What do you sell?
C. How many yrs in biz.
D. What are your sales?
E. What do you want from investor?
If you can elaborate will be easier to help

What are the profit margins for high end home decor and furniture?
Hone decor / furniture industry is one of the highest profit promising industry today. The profit margins on home decor ranges from 20% - 45% depend on the price of the product. If you're looking to get quickly popular, I suggest you start with the online store and promote it on offline as well. Keep the margins low initially so that you can attract more buyers. As the business grows, reinvest the amount back on the business so that you can stock more varieties. All the very best.KK

What is a good/average conversion rate % for an e-commerce (marketplace model) for customers who add to cart through to purchase order.
There is quite a bit of information available online about eCommerce conversions rates. According to a ton of sources, average visitor-to-sale conversion rates vary from 1-3%. This does not mean the Furniture conversions will be the same. The bigger problem is that visitor-to-sale conversions are not a good data point to use to measure or tune your eCommerce business. All business have some unique friction factors that will affect your final conversion rate. It's very important to understand each of these factors and how to overcome them. The best way to measure and optimize is to take a conversion funnel approach. Once you have defined your funnel you can optimize each conversion rate to better the total effect. For example: Top of the funnel: - All web site visitors, 100,000 / month First conversion: View a product page, 50% of all visitors Second Conversion: Add to Cart, 10% of people who view products Final Conversion: Complete Checkout, 80% of people who put items in a cart In this example we see that only 10% of people who actually view products put them in to a cart, but 80% of those people purchase. If you can figure out why visitors are not adding items to their cart and fix the issue to increase the conversion rate, revenue should increase significantly because of the high checkout rate. You can use free tools like Google Analytics to give you a wealth of information about your site visitor and their behavior or there are some great paid tools as well.DM

What exit strategies do angel investors want/prefer for a service business?
Keep in mind that investors invest for returns. Telling a prospective investor that you want his or her money to grow your business but don't plan on ever generating a liquidation event that pays him or her a dividend is not likely going to work; angel or not. You may be better served with debt financing where returns are generated in the form of interest payments not equity value growth. BUT, if equity financing is the plan, you're going to want to develop a strategic exit plan right from the start. That means identifying prospective buyers, strategic channels etc and characterizing the value drivers for each right up front. You'll find prospective buyers come in a number of forms; competitors, bigger versions of you, strategic partners, private equity, etc. Each will value your business in different amounts for for different reasons. Understanding this is vitally important for you to navigate to securing the right money, from the right sources, with the most favorable terms. Once you've qualified and quantified each of them, then determine what (specifically) you're going to need to do to align your business with those prospective buyers generating the highest returns. This will drive your business model and go to market strategy and define your 'use of funds' decisions. This in turn result in a better, more valuable business whether you exit or not. Do it this way and you'll have no trouble raising money from multiple sources. Among platforms for startup funding, AngelList is the 800 pound gorilla. Does it make sense to use simultaneously other platforms like Gust, etc?
Short answer: Of course! Many angel groups require you to submit through Gust because it offers a consistency and makes reviewing applications easier. But not all use Gust same as not all use AngelList... I haven't met an angel who frowns upon using multiple platforms. I would encourage you to leverage your twitter and Facebook or Instagram to meet angels and get in their radar (don't hassle or stalk) just try to get exposed a bit to them by being part of the same meetup group, follow the same blog, membership... Subscribe to their own blog.. And when you submit funding request considerations do please send a follow up email or a call or basket of fruits if you have contact them before.HV
