I've been helping men and women with weight related issues in medical practice for over 20 years, and see private patients in Santa Barbara. I recently studied my own medical practice, thousands of peer-reviewed studies, performed a beta test of 24 day eating, fitness, sleep and stress/mindset program, and presented the results at Medicine X and SXSW. I also wrote a new book: REFUEL, about how men can get strong, fit and healthy.

Healthy Cooking and Culinary Medicine

I graduated from the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago, taught nutrition at the Kendall School of Culinary Arts and taught the first cooking and nutrition course in a U.S. medical school (SUNY). I also taught the first culinary medicine course for clinical students (DMU) and wrote the NY Times best-seller ChefMD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine.

Communicating Well on National Television

I co-hosted Health Corner TV (on Lifetime) with Joan Lunden and Leeza Gibbons for nearly 4 years and over 120 episode; hosted and co-wrote the "What's Cooking for ChefMD?" segment for it; wrote and hosted a 30 minute and 90 minute PBS Special "Getting Healthy with Dr John La Puma" and recently wrote and hosted "REFUEL Minute" for YouTube. Communicating well on TV is possible if you prepare; if you are an expert and not a sales person; and if you speak directly to another person. It is almost that simple, but it is not easy, and it takes practice. Happy to tell you how I prepare.

When I began my work at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, there was an article in the local paper about what Dr. La Puma was doing with food as medicine through his clinic. I knew I had to meet him and I was lucky enough to work for him in clinic until the sunny skies of California took him away from the midwest. Dr. La Puma cares for his patients (and staff), knows how to make eating healthy and cooking fun and delicious, and meshes food and medical care in a way that is brilliant and makes everyone believe eating healthy and making good decisions can be done every day. Everyone should be lucky enough to have the chance to experience what Dr. La Puma offers as a proactive approach to self care that happens to be tasty and fun to do.

John gave an outstanding presentation at my Gel Health conference in New York in October 2009. This was a high-level gathering of innovators, executives, and other leaders in healthcare - and John gave a talk that was engaging, informative, entertaining throughout.
