I had the unique pleasure of working on a multidisciplinary design team initiated by Hala, when she served as an Engagement Director at TandemSeven. This was for a multi-year portal project for our new client, Howard Hughes Medical Institute (Chevy Chase, MD). Hala built the team to include design research and planning, user experience architecture, information architecture, technology and visual design. She helped us join with our client, their stakeholders and end-users, with the goal to carefully redesign and enhance the institute’s intranet. Hala earned my respect through her creative insights and flexible methodology, responsive to our client’s culture and development needs. Most important, she kept us focused on keeping the needs of the end-user uppermost in the forefront. Her ability to combine theory with practical application helped launch this multi-year project which ultimately, in combination with many talents provided by Howard Hughes Medical Institute, TandemSeven, and Capital Technology Partners, resulted in a Nielsen Norman Group Award (2010, International, Best Intranets). Hala’s early, dedicated efforts set the stage for research, effective design iterations and feasible technical implementations that met the needs of many user groups, both internal and external to the client organization. I learned a tremendous amount from Hala, and enjoyed her remarkable range of talents, interpersonal style, warmth and creativity, making my work on this project, exciting, challenging and rewarding.
