Over the past two years, Zack has created a thriving start-up community here in the Norfolk/VA Beach region. When Zack cooked up the idea of doing an accelerator in Downtown Norfolk, many of the usual suspects thought it would take a lot of work and be a very risky thing with little chance of success. They were right, of course. But they missed the fact that, whenever someone tries a new thing and puts his or her reputation on the line, that person has to be willing to work hard, take some risk, listen to criticism, and have the courage to say truth to power. Zack has done all that, learned some lessons, and made our region a better place in the process.
Zack did an amazing job in getting Start Norfolk off the ground. It was great to see such a successful series of events started by someone in the private sector. Zack's energy and effectiveness made a lot of people in this area proud to participate in Start Norfolk. I recommend him highly. It's going to be interesting to see what Zack is doing five years downt he road. I'm sure it will be impressive!
Few times in life especially in business do you meet a person who has the passion, vision, and courage to create some "Extra Ordinary and Exciting i.e. Start Noroflk" for the business community and the people its serves despite many challenges. Zack Miller is one of those people. He is a pioneer of creating a ecosystem for start-ups especially in technology in the city of Norfolk and eventually in Hampton Roads, VA. Zack is the most charismatic person I know. That may not sound amazing given that we all know charismatic people, but most charismatic people that we know lack "follow through".....not Zack. He takes on projects that he loves, and when he loves the project he gives it everything he's got. I'm working with Zack on a community betterment project where I am continually amazed at how well he communicates his love for our city to people twice his age and helps them remember why they live and work in Norfolk, VA. Between his efforts with this project as well as his nurturing of Start Norfolk, I've seen him reinvigorate the entrepreneurial spirit in people who have become complacent and generate support behind projects that may never have seen the light of day if not for his drive. Zack's combination of charisma and follow through are unmatched and make him an exciting and refreshing person to work with. Every city needs a Zack Miller. (maybe someone at the next Start Norfolk will figure out an affordable way to clone him!)
