TMTanti McCormick23 years homeschooling 7 kids. • Stafford, VirginiaOriginally from Singapore. I homeschooled all 7 of our children from kindergarten through high school; 5 daughters, 2 sons. Oldest son is physically and mentally handicapped. 4 children will have graduated high school by summer 2024. Being a retired military family, we've moved 5 times which includes Hawai'i and the continental U.S. I taught all 7 children how to read and am their primary teacher. Two of our daughters are in the High School Honor Society, and one daughter is in the College Honor Society as well. We also enroll our children in a homeschool co-op so that they get the classroom and socialization experiences, as well participating in extra curricular activities such as basketball, soccer, cross country and track and field, and Student GovernmentAssociation. Four of our daughters made it into the Varsity and Junior Varsity running team in their team. I enjoy teaching the elementary and middle school subjects. I am passionate about teaching reading because once a child is capable of reading, it opens up a whole new world for them to imagine and explore. My oldest son, who has a learning disability due to his muscular dystrophy terminal illness is unable to go beyond 3rd/4th grade level academically so being able to read a plethora of books from the library affords him the ability to read about numerous subjects/topics for which he's unable to pursue via the traditional academic channels. The one thing that has been challenging in our homeschool experience is having three children who are affected by behavioral health problems such as anxiety and depression. It's affected our family and homeschooling life tremendously and we do our best to face each day with great faith, determination, and communication. Our oldest daughter graduated from the Northern Virginia Community College with an Associates Degree in Fine Arts. Our second oldest is graduating from Massage Therapy School and will pursue a holistic/medical massage therapy career. Our third oldest will graduate from college next year and God-willing, commission with the Air Force after college graduation. My husband retired from the Navy after 23 years of active duty service. He is currently a government contractor and works full time from home. I've taught elementary core subjects and elementary writing at one of our homeschool co-ops. Prior to marrying my husband, I worked for the State Department at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore, where I met my husband. Once we moved to the U.S., I worked three years as an Assistant Business Manager for a Christian non-profit fraternal organization, the Mt. Vernon Columbus Club, primarily doing administrative work, data entry and coordinating and running the rental of the building where I worked for business/state-related and personal events which include state elections, medical seminars, business conferences, weddings, Quinceneras, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Homeschooling is an adventure that I always say is a calling. Not everyone are called to homeschool but it is certainly a journey that's worth pursuing. It takes a surmountable amount of dedication, time, commitment, love, patience, understanding and requires both parents to agree and commit to homeschooling. I'm blessed that my husband has been very supportive since the beginning and continues to support me with homeschooling each child. There are plenty of ups and downs but we do not regret this choice we made. I'm also blessed that many friends have helped us in our homeschooling journey along the way and the one way I can convey my gratitude is to extend any help I can through my experiences and knowlege to anyone who is delving into homeschooling.
