Honestly, through trial and error. Be lean and nimble. If something is not working, change. If it does work, keep sticking your bucket down the hole until the well runs dry.
Indeed. Plans are almost everywhere.
May I suggest we frame your question a little to convey more detail (but not too much) in order to get you the help you need?
Allow me to assume that you have already "found a need" and wish to fill it. In fact, the best needs are the ones we face as individuals or professionals trying like everyone else to, "do more with less" and still be excited to go to work each day.
Let's call this Step One.
QuickNote: Have you found out the hard way that no one worth their weight in bitcoin will sign an NDA? Great. We can move to the next step...
Step Two: Is your "product" bought mostly by Consumers (as in a B2C, where your business sells to the end consumer of a good or service)? Or is your approach a B2B where you sell to other businesses? In a few cases it might be a variation or combination of these models.
Step Three: What industry will you serve? For example, I don't do food or beverage startups and rarely mentor founders in those spaces. Plus, as a result of my industry focus, I mostly work with B2B or B2B2C models. Are you beginning to see how it all fits together? Perfect!
Step Four: For now, this is the last question... Do you have experience in the industry you are building a "product" for, and if so, how long and how many roles have you filled inside that industry? We will ask later how well you are connected to other professionals in your target market.
Get the idea? Most of us on Clarity would like to focus on the areas and people we can help the most.
Reach out with any questions you might have... once you have written down the answers to my queries.

P.S. I put Product in quotes because it may be a good or service. Or both. Or neither. {grin}

How did Snapchat boast a solid user base within a short period of time, compared to Facebook and Twitter?
I've been in the picture messaging space for a while now with my apps Lutebox (voted one of London's top ten most loved apps) and now Click Messenger. I've written a few articles about the space including a recent post about the Future of Mobile Messaging. Snapchat started out as an app called Picaboo, which pretty much did what it does now (prior to the latest update with chat and video calling). They quickly rebranded but saw a little uptake in user numbers and had quite low downloads for several months. Then around Christmas 2011 one of the founders' mom had told her friend about the app, who told her kid and her kid basically then spread the word throughout their high school in L.A. That was what really blew up their download numbers as it spread across teenagers at local high schools. As far as I know they didn't advertise in the early days, relied solely on word of mouth. Also it is assumed that they have a solid user base. Comparatively speaking, their user base may be in the low tens of millions, which may a great base of users, but nowhere even close to being as big as Facebook or Twitter. I'd be happy to speak about this in more detail or about the picture messaging landscape and what I believe to be the future of mobile messaging.AA

What is the industry average conversion rate for cold emailing?
Cold emailing is just as bad for you and the recipient. Even if you have the perfect list, the attempt to sell in a cold email is rarely going to be effective. You're better off curating the list to the top prospects, find a mutual connection on LinkedIn or even just cold-invite them on LinkedIn,. Worst case scenario, send a 'permission pass' email where you simply gauge interest and let them know you won't be emailing them again if there's no interest. Keep it very short, non-commercial with just solid information/links to web, and an easy to reply yes/no answer.BI

What is the most creative way to introduce myself (and therefore my service) to 100 key decision-makers without selling or pitching anything?
You've answered your own question. Reach out to your prospects with the question, such as "How would you...". Ask what people want then give it to them if you can with integrity and thoughtfulness.DI

How can I go about finding a business partner for my startup?
Hello! Aside from the typical website platforms, I would recommend using Twitter's hashtags and user handles. Try following and using the ones that your potential prospect or otherwise ideal partners would be following and start sharing about your work, your progress, and outreach for a potential partner. If possible try to be local when doing so. But obviously, some to use include Startups.co, Basecamp, Inc 500, yesPHX, BetaBulls, MPV, Lean Startup, Lean Methodologies, TechCrunch, etc.HV
