MenuI am looking for a mentor/advisor who can guide me in startup process based on local deals...something like groupon. Any advise where to look?
I am building a Saas based platform for local merchants helping them to connect directly with their customers. Building MVP which should be ready by May-June.

Clarity is the best place to find one, but as I can see from your question you are looking for more.
Networking events are designed to put people in contact with one another, making these events perfect opportunities to expand your professional network. For example, there might be a start-up incubator with an open workspace where you can get some work done and still meet some new people in the industry, or else a weekly brainstorming meeting among creative minds at the downtown library. Through SCORE, you can request a free face-to-face meeting with a mentor to discuss your business idea and you may be able to form a more lasting partnership.

Hi,
I would be happy to try and help. In addition to mentoring hundreds of startups - both from a business and legal aspect, I have also personally built an aggregator deals website - so I have personal knowledge with this field.

What are your tips for gaining advisory/board positions?
Approach it as if you were applying for a position in an organization. You will want to find the right industry, the right management team, the right opening on the board [either governance or advisory], the right person to help you. Next create a statement that says why you on this board. Then sell it.MC

How do I become a mentor at 500 Startups?
As a 500 Startup mentor I would suggest the following 1) Blog about distribution, design and data. Those are the things that 500 values most and usually the fastest way to get on their radar. 2) Interact with @davemcclure (and all other partners) on Twitter 3) Attend geeks on a plane or other events they host. It's all about relationships and perception, so create opportunities to increase the probability of showing them that you have skills that are relevant to the companies they invest in. Hope that helps.DM

What do you look for in a mentor?
A mentor should be someone who has successfully accomplished a goal that you wish to accomplish or have great insight. I personally would like a mentor that is helpful, patient, provides good direction, and doesn't mind communicating with me.KG
