Money is the bloodline of any business. The long painstaking yet exciting journey from the idea to revenue generating business needs a fuel named capital. Now, when would you require funding depends largely on the nature and type of the business. Some of these funding options are for Indian business, however, similar alternatives are available in different countries.
1. Bootstrapping your startup business
When you have your own money, you are tied to business. Some businesses need money right from the day-1 and for such businesses, bootstrapping may not be a good option. Bootstrapping is also about stretching resources – both financial and otherwise – as far as they can. Check out these 30 tips to save money and improve your business cashflow.
2. Crowdfunding as A Funding Option
This is how crowdfunding works – An entrepreneur will put up a detailed description of his business on a crowdfunding platform. He will mention the goals of his business, plans for making a profit, how much funding he needs and for what reasons, etc. and then consumers can read about the business and give money if they like the idea.
3. Get Angel Investment In Your Start-up
They prefer to take more risks in investment for higher returns. Angel Investment as a funding option has its shortcomings too. Angel investors invest lesser amounts than venture capitalists. Here is a list of popular Angel Investors in India – Indian Angel Network, Mumbai Angels, Hyderabad Angels. Also check out the list of individual Angel Investors in India, some of these active angel investors have invested in many successful start-ups.
4. Get Funding from Business Incubators & Accelerators
Early stage businesses can consider Incubator and Accelerator programs as a funding option. Found in almost every major city, these programs assist hundreds of startup businesses every year. In India, popular names are Amity Innovation Incubator, AngelPrime, CIIE, IAN Business Incubator, Villgro, Startup Village and TLabs. Popular business accounting software – ProfitBooks is also a part of Washington based accelerator Village Capital.
5. Funds by Winning Contests
It encourages entrepreneurs with business ideas to set up their own businesses. In such competitions, you either must build a product or prepare a business plan. We, at ProfitBooks benefitted a lot when we were regional finalists in Microsoft BizSparks in 2013 and won Hot100 Start-up Award in 2014. You can either present your idea in person or pitch it through a business plan. Check out the latest start-up programs & contests in your area. Here is a calendar of various Business Plan competitions.
6. Raise Money Through Bank Loans
Funding from bank would involve the usual process of sharing the business plan and the valuation details, along with the project report, based on which the loan is sanctioned. Learn how to get working capital loans in India. In US, sites like Kabbage can help you get working capital loan online in minutes. Unlike traditional lenders, Kabbage approve small business loans by looking at real-life data, not just a credit score.

OK! You want to increase the amount of $$ you have "on the street." Are you a brick-n-mortar? Online Lender? Blended? You use proprietary loan management software or something off-the-shelf such as Infinity, eCheckTrak, Epic... You are a State licensed lender? Which State(s). [As you likely know, Illinois and Nebraska just "went dark."] Perhaps you're employing the Tribal Model? Are you beyond a "friends & family" seed fund? The ROI on "the business of lending to the masses" can be superior. Make some noise. I've no clue how much $$ you're attempting to raise. But at a minimum, let everyone in your network know about your biz. How well it's performing. Avg. installment loans are 400%+ APR's! Are you giving equity? Debt? Jer Ayles. Call me. Plenty of capital looking for returns you're capable of delivering.

How to raise money for a hardware startup that needs money upfront to even produce a prototype?
Have you considered crowdfunding? Investment grants will be able to take care of funding but crowdfunding has the benefit of taking care of funding and providing a customer base. There are many examples of teams without a fully working prototype being successful on these platforms. Kickstarter will be off the table but you have some great options with Indiegogo (https://www.indiegogo.com/) and the Brazil specific network Catarse (http://catarse.me/en) Of course, you will have to focus on things like presenting your story and getting attention for a bit but if you are successful you will have money for a prototype, access to a customer base and exposure that could bring some helpful people onto your team - even the angels and VCs you'll need to get to the next level. Message me if you need some help - I'm not personally an expert in crowdfunding but I can connect you with some of the best in the business.JR

How should I raise capital and structure funding?
A company can issue common stock through an initial public offering (IPO) or by issuing additional shares into the capital markets. Either way, the money that is provided by investors that purchase the shares are used to fund capital initiatives. In return for providing capital, investors demand a return on their investment (ROI) which is a cost of equity to a business. The return on investment can usually be provided to stock investors by paying dividends or by effectively managing the company’s resources so as to increase the value of the shares held by these investors. One drawback for this source of capital funding is that issuing additional funds in the markets dilutes the holdings of existing shareholders as their proportional ownership and voting influence within the company will be reduced. Capital funding can also be gotten by issuing corporate bonds to retail and institutional investors. When companies issue bonds, they are in effect, borrowing from investors who are compensated with semi-annual coupon payments until the bond matures. The coupon rate on a bond represents the cost of debt to the issuing company. In addition, bond investors may be able to purchase a bond at a discount, and the face value of the bond will be repaid when it matures. For example, an investor who purchases a bond for $910, will receive a payment of $1,000 when the bond matures. Capital funding through debt can also be raised by taking out loans from banks or other commercial lending institutions. These loans are recorded as long-term liabilities on a company’s balance sheet, and decrease as the loan is gradually paid off. The cost of borrowing the loan is the interest rate that the bank charges the company. The interest payments that the company makes to its lenders is considered an expense in the income statement, which means pre-tax profits will be lower. While a company is not obligated to make payments to its shareholders, it must fulfill its interest and coupon payment obligations to its bondholders and lenders, making capital funding through debt a more expensive alternative than through equity. However, in the event that a company goes bankrupt and has its assets liquidated, its creditors will be paid off first before shareholders are considered. There are companies that exist for the sole purpose of providing capital funding to businesses. Such a company might specialize in funding a specific category of companies, such as healthcare companies, or a specific type of company, such as assisted living facilities. The capital funding company might also operate to only provide short-term financing and/or long-term financing to a business. These companies, such as venture capitalists, could also choose to focus on funding a certain stage of the business, such as a business that is just starting up.CN

What are some warning signs to look for in dealings with VC firms and individual investors?
Red Flags in early discussions: 1) Request to see a "business plan" (indicates lack of sophistication in early stage tech investing) 2) Talks to much about themselves or their firm (good investors should be 95% about understanding you and your business) 3) Talks negatively about anyone: This is a signal that they're unprofessional. 4) Seems distracted in conversation with you: Any evidence that they don't value your time is a negative signal in that they are either power-tripping or are simply not likely to be helpful. 5) Asks you "dumb questions." This is different in each case but you should feel that they are not asking questions which seem ignorant or reveal a lack of understanding of your business and industry.TW
