MenuHow can I start an online business?
Answers
It depends on what type of online business you want to run.
For selling online (physical or digital products), you need to figure out your audience first, and then find or create products, that will sell. Also consider how you will get paid - living in Egypt may put restrictions on money transfers (for example - does PayPal operate in Egypt).
You can also do freelance work online.
Bottom line - starting an online business is easy. Getting clients and getting paid is more complicated.
Good luck
Hi,
The good thing about an online business is that it's location independent. However; the basics of building a business still apply.
These are the most important:
1. Good - growing businesses are the ones which solve a problem. e.g. I need organic eggs in my area, but can't get them.
2. The need / problem to be solved is shared by a large enough market. e.g. Those who need organic eggs delivered to their home are not 1% of the market for online shoppers but a decent chunk.
3. You design a solution, thinking MVP. (research what an MVP is if you are unfamiliar)
4. Test out in small groups, do customer interviews. i.e. validate your idea - confirm the market really responds to it.
5. Invest more of your time, energy, money to building.
6. Keep iterating.
7. Solve problems and focus on execution quality.
8. For all of these, you need to read and research obsessively around this topic.
Wish you the best of luck.
I need more information about your individual situation to provide a better answer. What type of business are you interested in starting? What is your background? How much money would you like to generate from this online business? How much time are you able to commit to it?
With a general question like above, you will get a very general answer.
I've been running online businesses since 2011. Everything from selling eBooks and Digital Products to selling on platforms like eBay, Amazon, and Etsy to running my own wholesale business and eCommerce shop.
When you say you want to start an online business, do you have any idea what type of business you want to start? Is there a service you want to offer? Is there a product you want to sell?
Your question as asked is a little bit vague as there's so many different ways one could get into running an online business.
Assuming you mean eCommerce I would look to what products your country produces domestically. I don't know a ton about Egypt but I believe sheets, scarves and other textiles are high quality and I imagine cheaper than in many other parts of the world. I would begin to look into this for starters.
Can you elaborate more on what type of business you'd like to start?
Before starting your online business you'll need to have a clear brand strategy. You'll need to develop your brand so it looks highly polished and professional so you stand out. Presumably, you'll need to sell online. Both WIX and Shopify and great platforms which can be done quickly and on very small budgets. There's so much more I could write here, but hope that helps as a start and happy to answer any specific questions, please contact me directly. Hope all goes really well and best of luck, Therese

How do you get your first customers for a consulting business?
Back when I started LinkedIn wasn't as huge as it is now. I wish it was. I didn't have a large network and those networking sessions NEVER brought me any clients. I used to go to all sorts of them hoping to get clients. There were a couple of nibbles here and there, but never anything serious. The only thing that helped was reaching out DIRECTLY to people in my target market. That meant cold calls and cold emails. I'd sell myself while thinking about their needs. Once I got a few bites I'd build good rapport by keeping in touch, asking questions, repeating back what they were saying so that they knew I was on the same page and kept my promises. If I said I'd call them back next Tuesday at 2:15 I'd do so. Eventually I built trust with them without having a network, or an insane amount of experience. Oh and the most important thing about consulting is to LISTEN. When those first clients notice that you're truly listening and you're not selling the cookie cutter solutions everyone else is trying to sell them that's when you got them hooked. You start to understand their problems, fears, and see through their eyes and not just yours. A network will help, but in the beginning just good 'ol salesmanship will get the ball rolling.JC

What is the best way to write a cover letter to an early-stage startup?
Better than a cover letter is to actually proactively DO something to help them. It'll show them not only that you've researched them, but you're passionate about the startup and worth bringing on. A man got a job at Square early on for just making them a marketing video on his own (back before they had one). Since you're a web designer, design a stellar 1-pager that's targeting their message to a particular niche. Something they could use on social media or something. If they're like most startups, they're not interested in reading cover letters. They're interested in passionate individuals who can add value to the organization.AS

Pitch Decks: What do investors think of comedy in pitch decks?
Instead of calling it "comedy", aim for humor. Humor that supports a key discovery helps to anchor that insight in the investor's mind. I've coached many pitches, and find that when presenters are nervous they try to go for an improvised laugh, thinking it will cut the tension. However, in most situations, it comes off as just that: improvised and cheesy. Which confims to the audience that the presenter is nervous and unsure. Humor an advanced communication skill which requires strategy, planning and practice. The best humor is subtle and smart. The goal is not to get a laugh, but to get a knowing smile.DG

A tech startup fully outsourced. What problems would be in this situation?
The ideal way would be to hire the engineer while the project is still under development. You and the engineer should follow up with the outsourced partner in the process. This will give hold to the engineer and later more staff can be trained in upgrading or follow on versions of the product/service.SM

How do i handle gift certificates when buying a business?
Great question, this is something that can be handled with a proper deal structure involving some vendor financing. I recently did a video about this very topic for one of my YouTube followers. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/hWm4ZQxWlEw You basically make the vendor's outstanding gift certificates a 'currency' which can be used by the buyer to repay the vendor loan. It's a net-sum game for the seller since he's already received the cash without having to provide the goods or services. Hope this helps.
