MenuHow should I start a customer acquisition plan for a software business—paid acquisition to better control leads?
My software has been around for quite some time and getting some traffic from google but I want to build a more predictable way to get new customers. Shall I start with validating the channels first or first create the landing page to send traffic to?

Find out what your target market values and wants before you set up any kind of lead capture page or differentiation content.
Anything else is complete guesswork and virtually guaranteed to be completely off target.
Get some information interviews with members of your target market. Do this by phone. You can't automate it or do it by email because it's too slow and easily ignored. Plus, if you use an online survey, the responses are limited to the choices you give them and that is an approach which is too leading. You want the truth, not to confirm your own biases.

With that said, I specialize in marketing service based businesses and software -intangible value driven companies. Your situation is very common and to an expert what this says is that you are still figuring out who your target customer truly is. You might have sales and organic flow but it would be my expert guess that you haven't done your homework on them yet. No biggie though - what you need to do is conduct your research on patterns from your existing clients based on buying cycle, industry use, specific needs for that final buy decision, did you have to negotiate with them, educate them? - develop a buyer persona and get into the right mindset, once you have that buyer persona well researched and your mindset is based off facts rather than assumptions you can then easily create landing pages and call to actions that will have the highest possible conversion rates (obviously a/b testing them)
you should be able to avoid jargon and speak in their language and offer things of interest to them.
Once you know how to talk to your customers in their language, address their FUD (fears, uncertainties, doubts) the channels don't really matter.
This is basic inbound marketing - the work and time go into developing a proper content strategy around the consumer, user and the value proposition in english terms. Have content for each phase of the buying cycle - awareness, consideration, and decision. A 7 day retention rate may not be the right cycle by which to measure, depending on the natural usage patterns of your users. And besides which, this is probably not the one metric that matters to you, right now. For example, are the core social components working well but there's little evidence of any purchase conversion? Or is it flipped? People are reacting to certain purchase opportunities but not contributing too much to the social community you're trying to build? What are some marketing strategies that can be used to obtain your competitor's customers and gain more market share?
Lot of ways 1. Target their fans on facebook - if they are big (20k+) you should be able to select them as an interest 2. Bid on the same keywords as them on adwords search and/or display - this requires some technical chops but there are ways to find your competition's placements. If you can get there and present a better ad and/or outbid them, you can get the clicks they are used to getting. 3. Find where their customers are spending time online - another thing that will take some chops but you can find out what blogs, facebook pages, etc your competition's fans are looking at and get in front of them there. This is an indirect method. Most of the other options you will have are some variation on that theme. Make sure you have a way to stay in front of them (like retargeting or email marketing) if you want to make your investment go as far as possible! Good luckJR

How can I calculate my CAC (cost of customer acquisition) accurately?
At WP Engine, everything in marketing and sales is included in CAC. Salaries, commissions, coupons, direct advert spend (which you're saying you don't yet have), fees, travel and other costs associated with conferences, etc.. My advice is to err on the side of putting too much in CAC, because that helps you honestly understand the costs. Ignoring some costs just because they don't scale with company size or marginal new customers doesn't make sense to me, it simply means that certain components of your CAC you expect to get more efficient over time. Indeed, they had better! So measure it, instead of ignoring it. You also might find that some of those direct-spend channels are not as inefficient as they seem compared to things like SEO efforts. Or the reverse! All good things to explore of course. I'll also note that at $19/mo in the crowded space of CMS offerings you will find that very few channels will be efficient compared to the revenue you're generating. It sounds like you know that, and are dealing with it with "scalable" efforts like content marketing, however again you should be ruthless in understanding how those costs are really translating into orders and whether that's a financially sensible total strategy.JC

When working on a double-sided marketplace how do you work out cost of customer acquisition?
I'm the CTO of https://3dagogo.com a marketplace of proven to print 3D designs. We look at the two sides differently. There's not a single customer. In our case you have designers and purchasers ( sometimes the same person can be both ). Cost and methods for acquiring designers are very different than those to attract purchasers. I would clearly separate the sides and come up with separate cost structures. In my opinion when you're looking at the marketplace from the purchaser perspective, the other side's acquisition costs can be seen as fixed marketing costs.DA

What's the average CAC value or range for a Marketplace client?
I think you're looking at this the wrong way. Your customer acquisition cost is not something you should benchmark against other businesses. Without knowing more, like your short and long-term goals, it's impossible to answer. Two companies with similar business models may have different answers to this question. A venture-backed startup trying to keep up with aggressive revenue goals may be able to stomach an astronomical CAC. A bootstrapped startup that is not seeking venture money may aim for slower growth and much lower CAC. I suggest setting up a call with a marketing or finance expert to determine what CAC is appropriate for your company and how to get there.TL
