MenuMy plan is to start a budget travel planning business for those who don't want to be in a managed tour. What would you want me to take care of ?
We have been planning our own trips for a far cheaper and reasonable budget than what most tour operators would offer. My current plan is to not do the actual bookings, but instead create an itinerary and shortlist the places, sites, accommodation, and flight prices.

First off, you have to find out who would be willing to pay for this. All the information you describe here is already out there online, if you have the knowledge and the time to research it.
In my view, your segments should be found with people, who are too busy to build a schedule themselves, or don't know where to go and need inspiration on that. But is there a business case in building an audience, that would pay for that service? Traditionally travel agents get commissions from airlines and hotels, that they book with - would private customers be willing to pay for you? "Off-line-travel-agents" already exist.
I could see a business case for an "online-travel-agent", if you would make the bookings also. But that comes with a different responsibility as you would be closer to working as an actual tour operator, and handle when hotels have overbookes, flights cancelled, etc.
What you could consider doing could be building your own niche - trips to Spain, Greece, California, Northern Thailand, South Africa, whereever - and you become THE expert on that area. You would know everything - all sites, attractive accomodation, flights, means of transport, dangers and annoyances - and you build an online universe around that, but also do the bookings. Then you would get commissions from the different operators you would work with and be the source of knowledge about that.
Good luck with your business idea! If you would like to discuss this further, let's set up a call.
Best regards

Here are my thoughts in no particular order:
Travel planning can be very stressful especially with all the endless options of places to visit. If you can save people time and take stress out, you are definitely on to something. As humans we tend to gravitate towards convenience all the time.
Have you experienced what you are recommending? People want to know if you have experienced these places, sites, accommodations that you are recommending in your itinerary.
I’d would also include: packing list, travel apps list, travel podcasts list, emergency contacts.
Can you introduce your travelers to locals? This is huge! People want to connect with the locals during their travels and if you can find a way to make this happen, they will love you forever.
Is this targeted towards Millennials?
Including flight prices is great, but remember that they fluctuate all the time. What about including a list of sites that provide great flight deals?
Travel is a communal activity. Can you introduce travelers to locals or travelers with other travelers?
Does this make sense?
Happy to jump on a call for any follow up questions.
Always with gratitude,
-Cesar

What's the best Momentum to finance my Start-up? What are the key points that must be in place before opening equity or trying crowd fund it?
First and foremost you need to look at all ways to fund your start-up not just outside investment. How far can you bootstrap your start-up and self fund? Are their ways to get your first clients to fund development for in return for free life-time use etc. If this is not possible then you move through the different avenues of funding - Owner funding (how much can you put in - Outside investor look favorably on an owner having skin in the game), friends and family, angel investor, VC etc. I did not put crowd funding within the list as I would consider that more friends and family just organized through a kickstarter type site. The second thing to consider a compelling story on how the funding will be deployed to grow the company and to what level. From David Rose's book on angel investing; a typical angel will be looking for 25% IRR for their entire portfolio (Or in simple terms a 3.8x return on their investment on a 6 year hold period). In a portfolio of 10 companies 5 will fail on average, 2 will return 1x, 2 will return 3x which means that the final one will need to return 30x to make the angel's desired return. If that is the case any of the 10 need the POTENTIAL to make 30x return. How and to what degree can you offer returns for your potential investor.BD

I have a plan for a travel website, but I don't have the skills to bring it to action. What steps should I follow?
As I understand , you have domain expertise in travel industry and have a unique idea that you think will is needed in the market. I also assume that you did some study and came to conclusion that website is what you need (Not mobile first .. re-think !!) If you are a first time found I would strongly suggest you to understand the "Lean Start-Up" way (http://theleanstartup.com/) . I have developed products for big enterprises and for small businesses and and done my own couple startups in the past that ended up in the graveyard (No product market fit). Step 1 - Put up a landing page and validate your idea (https://medium.com/@joelgascoigne/how-to-successfully-validate-your-idea-with-a-landing-page-mvp-ef3c2d02dc51) You probably can do this under $50 Step 2 - While your idea was getting validated, you would have collected some emails. Talk to them and figure out the appetite and try to pre-sell the product or service.. Step 3 - Create an MVP. Unless you have something totally unique and unconventional, most of the data driven web products can be created using a word-press or any similar frameworks. Step 4 - Consult a technologist on how to go about it and get a landscape and roadmap developed. Ask for help to vett the right freelancer or part timer for this job Step 5 - If the version 1 makes you any money..man !! you made it.. double down ..At this point you can think of rebuilding the backend etc with the better architecture. These are no 5 magic steps .. I wrote it as I was thinking it loud. Feel free to contact .. ..and good luck !!NJ

Would you buy a smart luggage scale that saves you money, by keeping track of your luggage's weight and location?
No. My $0.02 is that you're over-engineering a solution to a problem that just isn't that painful to most people. And besides which, you kind of snooker yourself from a customer perspective. As a frequent flier, I always travel light. So you're not targeting the frequent flier. You're targeting the very occasional traveler who isn't aware of these weight restrictions. The idea that they are going to discover your app prior to traveling and then remember to use it every time they travel feels like a really big stretch to me. Happy to talk to you more about how to do effective customer development and validate/ideate your ideas.TW

Is there a service online that can help me figure out what legal disclosures/releases I need for my startup travel website?
Hello! Check out Shake, they have an app with a ton of free contract and terms templates. They're great with startups, so I'm guessing if they can't help you out they might be able to point you in the right direction. Cheers!AJ
