There are a few key traits that people look for in a manager, and the reason an employer asks for experience is to try to ensure that the candidate has honed them.
Those are:
"Big picture" thinking - you need to be able to detach yourself from the details and see the overall aim of your project. Someone with this skill will be more likely to understand when seemingly wacky decisions are made by corporate.
Resourcefulness - Budget cuts? Employees got the plague when you have a deadline? Thats not a problem for an experienced manager.
Overcoming objections - Everyone giving you excuses? Dragging out contracts? You can sail through this one with ease with the proper training.
Resource allocation - Are you putting the right assets in the right places? Are you hiring the right people? Are you giving preferred treatment? The more Experienced you are, the less Likely you will fall into this trap.
I am happy to go over your work history, resume and any experience you have had to help you find a way to overcome their objections - I am a CTO with a Liberal Arts degree, so I am a master at this.
This is not easy but the principle is to ask them questions about why the five years of experience made its way into the job search criteria.
Either there is a very good reason for this which will almost certainly be based on a fear which they think they can mitigate by putting the stipulation in place. Your job is to then ask questions about that fear and try to "close" on you as a total package being able to settle all those fears.
Alternatively they might just be asking about the 5 years because they thought tit was a good idea some time ago but it's lost its relevance today in which case you can steer around the objection.

Keep poking around the fears they have which are behind the job specification and prove that you can take them away. Ask them to question their own assumptions, perhaps using examples in their total experience, where the rookie outperformed the old hand.....use your own examples as a motivating metaphor.
In the final analysis, if they have good reasons then they protected you from failing in a job that was not right for you.
I would show up and communicate how extremely teachable you are - be honest about the fact that yes, you are young, but it's a benefit to them because they can teach and train you exactly how they want to. And since you're young you haven't picked up any habits that cannot be broken - and you're not set in your ways, you are moldable and willing to be flexible. Since the ball is in their court at present, have you followed up with a hand-written thank you card? This would be a perfect place to communicate all of the above - but before you do that, thank them for their time, for giving you the opportunity to interview, mention a couple of details about what makes the company such an ideal place to work, or such a team-oriented, conducive work environment, or how great the people are (note specifics), etc. :-)
Congratulations on making it this far in the process. If this is what you believe is truly the right fit for you, continue to pursue them while you wait out the 5 days. Politely, but assertively, reach out to let them know you are still here, interested, and ready.
I also think your age and in their words "inexperience" could be an opportunity for you to play up you energy and coach-ability. The most attractive trait I like in a leader is the ability to be coachable. If you can show them that you have the energy to learn the things you might lack quickly, because you are coachable and willing to take feedback, you might win them over. Being coachable means proactively asking for feedback, then quickly implementing what you've heard, which with you fire for the job, should be no problem.

Use the information on the job description to understand the role expectations, the skill sets, and how they align to your career goals. In such cases, your objective is to prove to the hiring manager why you are a valuable candidate for the job. Therefore, when making your pitch illustrate what you have to offer the company and how it will be relevant to the role.
To start, thoroughly go through the job description to understand what the company is looking for, precisely. Re-examine your resume, your past experiences and your skills set. In the final step, review how your qualifications make you the best candidate for the role and tailor an answer that illustrates this aspect based on the steps above. Highlight specific traits in your personality or relevant skills that make you the best candidate for the role.

Remember having a friend in a similar situation. What's your end goal? Do you want to be a great employee? Or a business owner? What kind of a business owner--hands on, or Olympian? Big differences. Specialized skills are what's necessary for being a great employee or hands-on business owner. If you want to be a leading, delegating, deal-making business owner, then you need a different skill set. In either case, simply knowing what you want and being able to articulate it will put you ahead of 99% of the pack. Most people have no idea what they want and drift from thing to thing...their next job is similar to their last, or the first one that was offered to them... You can literally shave years off your career path by being ultra-clear on your target and going straight for it. I've had employers create custom roles for me four times. Each one knocked several years off my career path. It's why I was a production manager with six supervisors and over 150 floor employees reporting to me at 26. I created that job, by sending the employer a package detailing my plan and requirements. Want to partner with the best to learn specialized skills? Sell them on the idea of why they need to hire YOU and only you. Want to learn the art of deal making, delegating and other soft skills? Sell the right kind of business owner on why they need to hire YOU and only you as their assistant. Get IN. Once you're IN, you will get a completely different view of the world. For example, I worked for a national electrical wholesaler for four years. A guy was an accounting clerk when I started, and after awhile he got promoted to assistant to the GM for an area with 11 branches. That guy instantly got access to all the high level data and IN on the decision making at that level. He got to see the issues, information, solutions, and people who played at that level. Near the end of my time there I did a stock tracking project and worked with him. On my first day, I was shocked to see all this data. I was suddenly IN. Nobody else in my department got to see this data. And it was "no big thang" for these head office guys; they worked at this level every day. Set your target and get IN. I bet you cut 10 years off your learning curve by doing so.JK

How can I properly explain a big gap in my resume to a potential employer?
Don't worry about the fact that you "failed". What you presumably did is work hard, and learn a lot, and probably created some quality stuff, regardless of whether it ended up being published. That's usually all your potential employers will care about. The people that work for companies that end up going out of business aren't considered failures. They generally produced quality work but their company may have just not been able to find / convince the right customers, which is equivalent to you not having found the right publisher. This is an optimistic way to look at it, but that doesn't mean it's not true in your case. I would publish whatever unfinished books you have on Amazon as e-books. Make a title and cover image. That way they're 'published' immediately, and each book will even get a DOI and/or PMID #. I'm a tech co-founder, 4 years in. I don't feel much passion for my work anymore, what should my next career move be?
I have lost passion at least 100 times. It happens and the situation you find yourself in can make it challenging for you to care. I totally get that. If you are planning on getting out, I would try to position yourself so you have some time to regroup. If you are in a position to do so, I would spend the next year reading, traveling, meeting with people, having discussions, sleeping, and thinking. My best ideas have came from times where I walked away from other things that were not working for me any longer. It takes time for our minds to detach from the things that are dragging us down. If you are like me, at that time I was working too much and not giving myself time for growth. Stopping everything and focusing on myself and my family renewed me and allowed me to once again access parts of my mind that were bogged down with everything I had lost interest in. How can I take my skills and experience in product development and turn them into a compelling offering to sell as a consultant?
Seems to me that versatility is actually your greater selling point. Yes, you could concentrate on 1 niche problem that you solve over and over again for various clients. Advantage: That streamlined approach would be efficient in terms of presentation and actual work load. Disadvantage: By promoting a very specific offering, you may be introducing yourself as the wrong tool for the job ... for most potential clients. If I stumble across you and find a landing page that stresses your ability to solve Problem X while I am dealing with Problem Y, then I assume you're less relevant than you might be. That does a disservice to your diverse skill set. You can marry the best of both worlds. Here's what I'd suggest. Clients will discover you both passively and as a result of active outreach. So 1. For your active marketing efforts, identify prospects where the client really needs you for Problem X, in which you're specializing. Introduce yourself as a specialist in Problem X (which is true). 2. For your more passive, less keyword-targeted online footprint, showcase your versatility rather than your specialization. That's also true. This way, you'll seem like a better fit for a wider group of potential clients. Instead of writing you off as a specialist, they'll consider engaging you as an IT "renaissance man". Narrow the focus of your presentation when you have narrowed your demographic. Widen that focus when the demographic is wider.JP
