MenuWhat's the best way to advertise a mobile app? I've tried FB, iAD workbench with no results, having flyers handed out on college campuses.
The app is GRADLIKE, for college students. I had thousands of flyers handed out on campuses hoping for .25% or so returns, but nothing came of that. I've been advised to rewrite the app store description with new keywords, but I'm hoping for some advice on what can really work before I take next steps.

Hi, that's because you're marketing it all wrong. I checked out your app and the free content doesn't seem compelling enough to want to pay for the rest.
Your messaging is all over the place trying to target every possible audience within the college environment. An app like this should be native. Look for ways to couple college living with tips and answers that would benefit students.
Pick channels and stick to one goal/audience per channel.
Today's marketing is not about throwing ads at people and expecting growth.
Ask yourself -
How can I efficiently reach and had a conversation with my customers?
How and where can they best reach me? My services?
How and where can I facilitate my customers/users reach each other? (Promote word of mouth?)


How much time did you spend with students validating the concept and materials before putting the app together? It's important to know who your target audience is before choosing the appropriate method to reach them.
Regarding the specific ASO side, don't worry too much about the app description beyond the first couple of lines for getting the core USP across. Definitely work hard on your keywords and screenshots though, and keep a close eye on your App Analytics account to see how many visitors you are getting to your page and the conversion rate to installs.


It really depends on how much you have to spend but in my experience, the lowest customer acquisition costs come from influencer marketing (non-organic word of mouth). I'm in no way affiliated with them, but Neo Reach (neoreach.com) has a scalable influencer marketing model that is genius. It's pricey, but genius. I can make an intro to one of the co-founders if necessary.

Handing out flyers actually sounds like a nice idea. Not because you'll get many users (you won't). But because you can ask for feedback face-to-face, which is more valuable than on a form or on a call.
If you want to promote the app, you'll need to share it online to reach a wider audience.
Before you start paying for ads, make sure you get the basics right. Define a market & strategy for distribution, launch on free platforms like Product Hunt, set up some Search Engine Optimization (SEO & ASO), and try your hand at a bit of viral marketing.

I have built two software companies by hiring out the development work. I sold one for a decent sum during the dot com era (circa 1999). I remain a shareholder in the other one. iOS App: Beta vs Launch Quietly?
I would suggest launching in a foreign app store only (ex: Canada). That will allow you to get more organic users to continue iterating without a big push. Any opinions on raising money on Indiegogo for an app?
Apps are difficult to fund on IndieGoGo as few are successful, and we rarely take them on as clients. Websites like http://appsfunder.com/ are made for that very reason, but again, difficult to build enough of a following willing to pay top dollar for an app that could very well be free, already existing in the marketplace. What is the best technology for developing a new mobile app from scratch?
There are two sides to that question. One is the mobile app itself and the other is the backend. If I misunderstood in any way and you didn't mean "native" app I apologize in advance. On the backend, there is no clear cut answer to which is the "best". It depends solely on the developers you are able to get. We for example use Node.js , mongoDB, redis, elasticsearch and a couple of proprietary tools in the backend. But you have your pick of the litter now both on the backend api and the datastore with the myriad of options available and touted as the "best" currently on the market. Now on the app side again it solely depends on what you need your mobile app to do. Experiencing first-hand "develop once, run anywhere" I can say it's more like "develop once, debug everywhere" to quote a Java saying. We have tried Phonegap and Titanium Appcelerator and we have switched to native (ObjC and Java) after a couple of months of trying to go the hybrid route. The reasons behind the choice are as follows: - anything that breaks the pattern of how those frameworks NEED to operate is just a huge technical debt that keeps accruing a huge interest. - anything that uses css3 accelerated animations on Android is buggy at best and slow as hell at worst on any lower (< 4.1 I think) versions of Android I hope this gives you some insight.
