MenuI have a word game website with about 20,000 DAUs (all US / UK traffic). What are some ways to monetise except ads and "freemium" options?
I'm sure I can do better with my website. I don't want to turn it into an ad kingdom, but I do wish to monetise it better. Is affiliate marketing an option?
If you're an expert at this I would love to get on a quick call and discuss some options!

First of all great job on the traffic, 20,000 DAUs is really good. I have a lot of experience in the mobile game industry, specifically in Word, Card, and Casual titles. My answer is based on that experience.
I have a few ideas on how you can monetize your website. I will put them in order of what I think would be most effective for revenue and retaining users.
1) Incentized Ads - This is a great way to use ads without turning your site into an "ad kingdom." An example of this would be to ask the user to watch a video ad in exchange for playing the game. For example they enter your site and start playing the game and when they are done you ask them to watch a short video to play again. The advertisers will pay you for every video play and the user takes the action.
2) Subscription - This model is best used by Netflix. Get them to play the game for a trial basis and if they want to continue they pay a small subscription free.
3) Donate - This is the least lucrative. Wikipedia uses this model and asks users to pay to keep the service going.
If you need more details please let me know.
Take Care,
Jonathan
Your best bet probably isn't those kinds of ads to be honest. Have a few ideas if you want to have a quick call
I'd say affiliate options could be good, but more than that, do you have an email list of all the users? Do they have to provide their email in order to use the site? If so that's your best asset right there. You need to use the email list and build a marketing funnel of offers around it. I could certainly add to your efforts if you are still interested in doing a call.

How much would it cost to set up a small vendor-based eCommerce website like a mini Alibaba, Elance, or Upwork?
You appear to have a very broad concept. The more features you add in the more expensive it will be. I'd recommend figuring out the key feature you think will appeal to potential users and build a MVP based off that. If that feature doesn't attract users, having the other features wouldn't have helped. I'd be happy to talk through your idea and make some recommendations building a test platform.BC

What are some of the different marketplace monetization models for selling second-hand collectibles?
Your pricing model should hinge on the fact that the perceived value of services should outweigh the cost associated with it. You can consider looking at online marketplaces like Craiglist, Kijiji, Airbnb, etc to understand various types of business models. However, the approach shouldn't be based on what others are doing. Rather, you should understand your niche, values associated with the niche, and adopt appropriate pricing model. Invest your time in designing the business model for your startup, followed with reviewing it vis-a-vis other models. Need help with business model? Feel free to reach out.SB

What are creative ways to monetize an advice / self-help blog with good traffic?
Two things that immediately come to mind would be use of webinars, that allow for audience participation, covering a specific topic of interest to your audience for either a small attendance fee or as part of a premium subscription. I would lean more towards the premium subscription for the recurring income. The second would be to make regular book and audio resource recommendations from Amazon, providing your Amazon affiliate link to pick up the resource.CW

Is a subscription based model a viable monetization strategy for a mobile medical app? Is the app industry shifting towards this?
Freemium revenue for mobile apps was up 211 percent last year (2013), according to a report from mobile analytics company App Annie and IDC. 83 percent of the top thousand apps on each of the iOS app store and Google Play — monetize via freemium, an even bigger proportion of revenue generated by those top 2,000 apps arrives via freemium: 92 percent. Naturally, the key to success as an app developer who uses the freemium model is getting as large a percentage of your free users buying something as possible. That’s a significant challenge. You have to do what makes the most sense for your app and the users on it. You must create value for the user and make it compelling for them to spend money on whatever you plan on offering. In terms of viable it is tough to say because I don't know what your medical app does. 1. Look at the data from your app 2. Talk to your users about what they want 3. Look at what your competition is doing or others in a similar verticalTP
