MenuI co-founded an online newspaper/entertainment blog in NYC with a writer and we can't find a way to monetize it.

Let me tell you what you need to do. Let me give you the magic pill if you will.
Take Action. Make a landing page, then...don't stop no matter what. Start posting to LinkedIn, Facebook, everywhere, send emails to your friends, your connections, everybody and get them to go to the landing page and sign up for your newspaper.
Once you can prove readership you can focus on finding out what type of articles your readers like. From this data you can decide what type of ads will sell best on your site. Until you can sell ads, fill in the spaces where the ads would otherwise go with your own ads. Make some ads for your newspaper. Come up with a product to sell. Give ads away for a limited time. Don't stop taking massive action.

Hey,
Sounds like you've been working really hard on this project. Well it seems you've built the right foundations to make good revenue from this online blog.
What made you choose Adwords as your way of generating income?
There are many different ways in generating incoming and I would personally advise dealing direct with brands which are most suited to your audience. Don't simply sell them advertising space, generate an entire campaign based around their brand, including articles and competitions, (something they can get involved in and also help promote too.)
I would be more than happy to offer more advice (or to be involved.) I'm based in England so could help grow your business around the world.
The realities of media and publishing are such that it requires massive audience to effectively monetize any content.
It's awesome you guys have built up 25-50K in visitors monthly , but realistically the cost of actually building a 10-15MM unique user audience (profitable) monthly is WAY out of the range of possible for most people/start-ups.
Your sweet-spot and skill so far has been to CREATE CONTENT, and arguably content that a group of people (25k-50k) want to consume.
You will need to look elsewhere for audience - you need to syndicate your content and get paid by larger trafficked properties who are looking for solid programming around specific topics your covering.
This is a very real and tangible way to create predictable revenues month-2-month from your publication.
Happy to give you examples.

Hi! It seems you have not enough traffic to use media banners like main revenue source. I recommend to use native advertising formats in explainatory journalism genre, when you describe the advantages of different commercial products. You need to follow several points to make it happened and not ruin your media:
1) Make the unit economy model where you should reflect costs of production and price for one article or special project
2) Always mark paid articles that it was created specially for your partners and make it helpful for your users
3) Build a landing page where you describe the format advantages and hire someone who can sale it
Good Luck!

What are some of the different marketplace monetization models for selling second-hand collectibles?
Your pricing model should hinge on the fact that the perceived value of services should outweigh the cost associated with it. You can consider looking at online marketplaces like Craiglist, Kijiji, Airbnb, etc to understand various types of business models. However, the approach shouldn't be based on what others are doing. Rather, you should understand your niche, values associated with the niche, and adopt appropriate pricing model. Invest your time in designing the business model for your startup, followed with reviewing it vis-a-vis other models. Need help with business model? Feel free to reach out.SB

How can I significantly increase traffic to my website (DrivingTests101.com)?
You don't seem to have any customer engagement and informative work beyond the 10 articles I see on the site. If you are getting 10k UV already, you need to only combine content and email marketing to increase the visits, but if you really want to grow to 500K UV or more, you will need to do a lot of activities, repeatedly for about 6-9 months.. Then there are other things you can do.which will result in more downloads or purchases for you. (You should not assume that traffic means business, there are other methods such as Performance driven marketing, which is something you can easily qualify for...) Anyhow, if you just need traffic and links, here is a brief summary list of things you can do and it will generate traffic, will not be flagged or getting booted by Google for any algo changes...: Since Content is the KING, we will focus on content driven marketing, here is a rough layout of the activities: 1. Set a Regular Writing Schedule 2. Create a Free Giveaway Worth Wanting (but it should get you subscribers) 3. Create Your Social Media Accounts 4. Join Quora 5. Leverage Rich Snippets & Google Authorship 6. Interlink Your Posts 7. Leverage Your Expertise, do some presentations and publish them on slideshare and such places 8. Get a good Guest Blog done 9. Blog Commenting is important, but only so so... Forum Commenting will help you build up your online reputation 10. Expanding on Social Profiles, Advertising on Facebook, Marketing on LinkedIn, Google+ Pinterest (do checkout tools like hootsuite.com) 11. Create an Infographic, Gifographic at least 1 in a month, this is sure to get you good places and backlinks 12. Look for Interview Opportunities, yup, some PR and Help A Reporter Out (http://www.helpareporter.com/) they need stories & you can provide them, if any... will be fantastic. 13. Don’t Neglect Local SEO 14. Creating Animated & Whiteboard Explainer Videos (cost about 15$ on payperhour type sites) 15. Using Zemanta, a “Content Discovery Network” 16. The Power of Retargeting - yes, check out sites like http://www.adroll.com/ http://www.ebayenterprise.com/marketing_solutions/display_retargeting/ http://www.chango.com/solutions & https://retargeter.com 17. Syndicate your content, case studies through Outbrain.com type sites, that will show your quality posting in probably all top media sites. Hope this helps. Ravi VCRV

What is the average amount of profit that a business should aim for?
One thing I like about your question is the fact that you're ASKING it. Trying to quantify profit. Most people never even get that far. They treat profit--especially if it is that of their own business--as some ethereal thing they will "get later" if possible. "To manage we must measure" is a business maxim and a fundamental one for me. If we don't build Profit into our revenue equation, we're unlikely to get any. And so asking this question and building profit right into your revenue target is a powerful idea nearly all small business owners totally miss. As for an answer...that amount is really up to you. What do you need to survive? There are so many variables we don't know about: what kind of business, what scale, what paths to market are you using, etc. etc. that affect costs, together with the price tolerance of your marketplace, that it's not possible to give an "average" answer. When I train business owners on how to set their operation up for success, I recommend 20-30% of revenue be built in as a monthly amount for profit. However, this is usually for consultants, and may not be possible for other business models. Sometimes 5% profit is what's achievable, say for a commodity provider, and if they make money with that, OK. Have you done any studies of comparative firms in your niche?JK

What are creative ways to monetize an advice / self-help blog with good traffic?
Two things that immediately come to mind would be use of webinars, that allow for audience participation, covering a specific topic of interest to your audience for either a small attendance fee or as part of a premium subscription. I would lean more towards the premium subscription for the recurring income. The second would be to make regular book and audio resource recommendations from Amazon, providing your Amazon affiliate link to pick up the resource.CW
