MenuWhat is the best way to convert a product UPC to a GTIN case code when the same UPC is packed in two different case configurations?
This question is specific for the CPG industry. I have two identical items that are packed in two different case packs -- a 6 pack and a 12 pack. (Both are sold as single items, not multi packs.) For the case UPC, we typically have converted the UPC to a GTIN, which I understand is common, normal, accepted, etc. For the secondary case pack, we have been using a modified GTIN code -- which works if you're viewing the full 14 digit number.
One of our distributors only works with only the core 10 digits of the code (excluding the prefix and check digit). In this case, the GTIN for the 6 pack and 12 pack appear to be identical. (The distinct digits are cut off.)
Would it be proper to just create a new UPC that maps only to this unique case pack? Or is there a better…

Depends if each item is sold individual, why would you need a 6pk & 12pk? I would have one GTIN a 6pk, that way if they order 12 it is just two 6pks.

What are the demographics for people who shop at Costco and other wholesale clubs?
COSTCO AFFLUENCE: You might be surprised to know that 54% of CostCo's Wholesale Club (CWC) members are considered wealthy, or "affluent", with only 15% just "getting by" or "poor". BUSINESS VS CONSUMER: Approximately 24% businesses, 76% individual consumers. Even though business customers drive about 60% of CostCo's revenue, about half of that is for home use, so it's about 30% business revenue and 70% individual consumer revenue. HOUSEHOLD: 35% of CWC members have 2 person households. 56% have three or more in their home. I have a ton of paid tools at my disposal for market research. For much more detail on other demographic data for CWC, along with info from BJs and other wholesale clubs, set up a call with me on Clarity.RD

Should I go niche or be a general marketplace?
Good question. Which idea makes more sense? You could organize a survey to be distributed to a small group of people that represent your potential clients. See where the demand is and make your decision on that. The less-niche approach sounds sort of like Craigslist, which might be hard to compete with. For that reason, I'd probably go with the first idea. But you may want to survey your audience first.ZH

What is the most efficient way to integrate physical retail inventory into an e-commerce platform?
I have experience working at Target where we had thousands of different SKUs for the shoes and clothing department, and also handled online orders. In my experience the best platform for integrating physical retail inventory into an e-commerce platform is using Stitch Labs. Once you set up your initial account, Stitch brings all of your inventory together by integrating with your shopping carts, marketplaces, POS, payment processors and accounting solutions. This means that when you sell an item of clothing in a physical retail shop or any online platform including Amazon, Amazon FBA, Etsy, eBay, Shopify, etc. your master list of inventory is adjusted accordingly. They also integrate with Xero to push orders through and make accounting a breeze. If you would like to discuss inventory control or multi-channel e-commerce further, please reach out. Thanks, ReedRT

Is there a solution that could run a marketplace eCommerce website on the front-end and a wholesale system on the back-end?
The only 2 companies I have heard of that could do something like this are: 1-Airship: they have automated all the processes of dispatching, logistics, customer support, credit analyses, order fulfillment, etc on the backend. In the front end you just built your own e commerce website. It is plug & play and that easy. 2-Indemand. (Tryindemand.com) They built the order management, inventory system and dispatch on the back of a white label e-commerce site. They are focus on grocery stores so don't know how much it will fit your specific needs. (Disclosure I know both CEO's and have invested interestsJC
