As a blog advertising agency, brands pay our bloggers per post. PR agencies want 'real' conversations, how to pitch w/o eroding blogger's earnings?

I've consulted with some of the largest blog advertising and online advertising companies in the world. Companies like IZEA (PayPerPost and others), MediaWhiz, etc. And I currently provide a robust Blogger Outreach service to many other large digital search agencies.

I'm not sure that I understand your question. But I think that you're asking how to get bloggers to talk about a client (or PR agency's client) without having it be a paid conversation?

This is tough if all of the bloggers in your network are used to getting paid. Chances are they really only run the blogs for the ad revenue, and not for an audience. That makes them a poor fit for PR agencies.

PR agencies contact writers and editors and pitch them ideas and story angles around interesting things their clients are doing. So you need to develop good creative ideas. One example is that at a previous agency I ran the CEO offered a gas subsidy program for employees who lived far away from the office and commuted every day when gas prices went really high at one point a while ago. So it was a BIG story in the news. Well we pitched our story to local media and within the week had them filming the story in our office!

Why is Social SEO important?

Great question! This has been a hot topic, and with the SEOmoz bi-annual report that came out recently and showed a very high correlation between social shares and high rankings, its even more important.

The answer is pretty simple. The more visibility your content gets, the greater the chances of people linking to it. So social media helps SEO by spreading the word and giving exposure to your content and brand. And this increases the liklihood of someone linking to you.

After all, if they can't find you they can't link to you.

How can I convince a client to sign up a 12 month SEO contract?

This is a great question, and one for the ages. Its difficult to run a business on month-to-month revenues. David mentioned earlier that he's run a successful business for over 5 years on with month to month contracts. And while it can be done, its just not stable and reliable. I've had clients for over 5 years before too, on month to month contracts. But its tough to do when you don't have 100 clients. When you have 10 clients and aren't sure if you can count on that revenue next month or the month after it really holds you hostage.

You definitely need to map out a plan for long term contracts. And in my business, SEO, you HAVE to have a long term approach. Because SEO results come over time. The ROI of SEO should be measured in years, not months, because long after I'm done working for a client they are still reaping the benefits of my work, compounding the ROI.

I offer discounts for 6-12 month commitments and find that this works, along with educating the client on why they need to give SEO a 6-12 month shot. It really boils down to educating the prospect or client. And the long term commitments are not just for my benefit. Clients need to commit to SEO and not get cold feet after 2-3 months and move on to a new SEO agency or give up all together. Doing this is sure way to ruin your business.

As an accounting graduate with no money and no connections, how do I start my own consulting firm? And how do I get clIents?

You could try all the things mentioned here. Hustle, Learn Marketing. Be a Pro. Etc, etc, etc..

But what you should really be doing is working a 9 to 5 first. Get real world experience working for another company or within someone else's consulting firm first, to learn the ropes. Also, the connections and network you'll build up will be invaluable down the road. This is honestly the best way to go, as a first step. Plot, the whole time, to eventually start your own firm. And when the time is right, you'll know it.

For my first job I'll be in charge of Marketing & PR for a 2 year old startup. How do I proceed?

With such a large team and already active social media accounts, you need to be producing tons of content. For both your properties and for guest posting on other related sites. But you'll need to also promote your own content too. Try to write really edgy and engaging titles and articles.

Use paid social media to amplify your content and message. Use targeted Facebook ads to also grow your visibility.

If at all possible, try to come up with a unique story and angle that you can pitch to big publishers online to hopefully get more mainstream authority.

What is the best service to hire to get SEO done for a website?

Getting the keyword research and on-page optimization in place should be pretty basic work, unless you have tens of thousands of pages. This part of SEO is pretty commoditized, meaning that its a commodity and not a specialty item anymore On-page SEO hasn't changed much in the past 9+ years.

Where you'll spend most of your time and money is in link building. So the best "service" to hire, meaning you wouldn't do it in-house, is definitely link building. Even large successful SEO agencies have a hard time doing link building in-house and often outsource parts or all of the link building work for their clients. I know, I'm a link building vendor to many large and small digital agencies.

How can I find out the cost of Social Media Marketing, SEO and SEM? Is there anyway to find out how much a particular company spent on it's campaigns?

You should never think of your marketing budget in terms of "spend" or set spends each month. Your budget needs to be fluid and based on performance.

If you spend $1 to make $3-$4 then spend until you make less from that dollar.

Competitive insights into marketing spends is tough because no competitor will ever give you access to the real numbers. But SEMrush is probably the best tool in terms of estimating a website's online marketing spend. It only looks at Google organic and paid though, not Facebook or anything else.

Which domain will have higher SEO chances?

Go with the domain that has the greatest brand marketing potential. Don't worry about SEO when it comes to your domain. You can definitely do well with odd TLDs like the .io or others. I've done it recently with mobile development client that has a .us. Their site did VERY well in organic, and still is doing well after over a year.

From experience, adding buyer keywords or call to action terms like "get" "buy" and others in the domain can entice more click thru. Its a call to action in your domain.

For SEO, is it better to use sub-directories or sub-domains when geo-targeting by country?

I have been working in SEO for over 10 years and have built search agencies from the ground up. I've also worked with some big brands on International SEO like Active.com, as well as many US based chains like Extended Stay Hotels.

I suggest sub-directories as they are MUCH easier to manage and promote via SEO.

You can't have specific local IPs with sub-directories, but you can with sub-domains. But that's not hyper critical, there are WAY more important factors. Plus, you can geo-target in Google Webmaster Tools. Your current structure for sub-directories is perfect: http://drivingtests101.com/Canada/Ontario

With subdomains, each will be treated like a brand new site. So you would have to work very hard to get each to gain good authority SEO-wise. Plus managing and hosting lots of subdomains is a ton of work!

In order to not get penalized you need to:
Implement the the "lang" and "hreflang" tags in the HTML of each country directory and all pages within.

Have unique Title tags and descriptions written in each language.

Have unique content for each country and state page. Written in each respective language.

Yes, its a TON of work but hey, you are trying to take over the world! If you are serious about international search traffic then you will do these things and the costs should be balanced out with the extra traffic you'll get. If you can make the root domain super authoritative then it will boost ALL of the internal pages. This is also key to ranking well for international search.
