I have known Melody Chalkley since 2006 when I became a teacher for Winfree Academy Charter Schools. Melody was the chief executive officer and superintendant for 5 campuses. Each campus had 20,to 30 teachers and staff, with student attendance varying from 250 to 350. Melody could often be found on the premises of any given campus interacting with teachers and staff and the students. Her primary focus was on the needs and success of the students and was continuously looking for way to improve the education process. During this time she also worked diligently to open a sixth campus. That campus is now open and educating students and preparing them for success after graduation. Melody Chalkley has always displayed a passion for education and provided great example as a leader. As a person, leader, coworker I recommend Melody Chalkley.
Melody Chalkley is the visionary leader and founder of the Winfree Academy Charter School District. She started the schools with 11 students in the basement of a church and has nurtured, lead and supported the development of six charter schools into an autonomous district. They are free public schools dedicated to drop-out prevention. Winfree is a place for students who were not served well by regular public high schools and they have become at risk. Melody Chalkley has been the Superintendant since the beginning of my employment there. She is a hand-on leader who goes to the schools as well as manages the system. She is an amazing person who has touched the lives of hundreds of at-risk students and made a better way for them.
