I have had the pleasure of working with Matt at Allscripts while on the Sunrise Mobile MD iOS project. Our team was given the task of building a new iPhone app for healthcare professionals that would integrate with our back-end services and data. There was one big problem though - none of us had done any work on the Apple platform before. This is where Matt came into the picture. He was initially hired as a consultant to help get our development effort jump-started, and he certainly did that! He dove right in and fleshed out the initial framework of the iPhone app, and patiently provided thorough education to us old-timers as we slowly came up to speed on the platform. The project ended up becoming a great success and it would not have been without Matt!

Thankfully, Matt joined the team full-time, and always continued to keep us on the leading edge of iOS development trends. When the iPad was announced, he was all over the new UI elements and design requirements of the new form factor, and he ensured the iPad version of the application was not just a port of the iPhone app - it really took advantage of what the new device had to offer. He also quickly became the team expert in speech recognition once Siri was announced for iOS, and he led the effort to integrate 3rd party speech libraries into our products. He is always looking for ways to improve the products and has a genuine passion for excellence in all he does. His design and coding skills are top-notch.

In addition to being an invaluable colleague, Matt is also one of the nicest and most interesting people you will ever meet. I cannot recommend him highly enough, and he would be a tremendous asset to any team or company that has the good fortune of being able to work with Matt. Corporate reorganizations over the past year have caused our project team to become dispersed, but I will always welcome the opportunity to work with Matt again.

Matt worked for me two years doing iOS development. He is an extremely bright and nice guy. Without Matt we would have never delivered the two mobile products as successfully as we did. If you ever have the opportunity to have Matt on your team, grab him. He is a rock star.

Matthew Thomas, iOS Developer and Speech Technology Enthusiast answered:

Technology is best when it gets out of the way. I hope and expect that next-generation apps will enable us to live richer lives, to get away from in front our screens more engaged in reality.

Google Now and Google Glass are examples of next-generation apps; technology that comes to you if there is something you need to know. For example; if you need to get to a meeting on time, Google Now let's you know in advance when you need to leave by and how to get there so you don't need to check.

More generically, next-generation apps should get to know you; your habits, preferences, and physical condition so that an app can become but an "augmentation" of yourself, in an effort to help you to be present in the moment, to be healthier, more efficient and happier.
