Which strategies would you recommend us at sublight.me to increase free-to-paid conversion rate? Displaying ads, limiting application functionality?

I have been building and selling digital products online for almost 3 years. I have tested and re-tested many models of pricing and found what works and what doesn't.

Here's my thoughts on your issue:

I would say that you need to determine what your goals are. Are you trying to get the most users, or are you trying to get paid users?

I took a quick look at your page and I had a hard time even finding what or how to upgrade my account, and when I did find the page, I was not given any incentive to upgrade at all.

I would remove all the places where you say 'It's Free!', because although you do have a 'lite' version with no-cost to try, the product itself is a paid product. This not only will enhance the value of your paid product, but will also greatly increase the value of what your are giving away for free with your 'lite' or trial account.

I feel that you need to define who you are selling to and what it is they are getting in return and then you need to ensure that there is clearly stated and obvious value to upgrading.

What are top factors you'd want to understand before committing to a PDP?

I have built my business on strategic partnerships and it's great that you are thinking in this direction.

As for your questions:

1. You need to be able to define and prove the value for the other company to want to partner with you -- this is all about them and what you can provide. Do you have experience and can you prove that you can indeed do what you say you are going to do?

If you have these things, then you have to make the contact and pitch your deal.

2. This is too vague, so I unfortuantely cannot provide any advice towards it.

I am more than willing to sit down with you and hone your pitch and help you get this partnership rolling in a mutually beneficial way.

What to do when your beta product becomes a custom application for one large customer?

It seems like you have managed to move into the coveted market of Enterprise level SaaS, well done.

If your market can sustain a high enough monthly cost to keep using your software then you are set. If so, you have a template for each compnay to follow and also a proven track record to sell from. Now you just need to find more companies and sell them a custom application for their businesses and get them paying a monthly fee for security and support.

Unfortunately, if you are in a market where the businesses cannot afford a $2000/month+ application fee, you may need to step back and rethink where you have ended up.

Mobile or Desktop App? How should I start?

I would think that they market the you are attempting to target would dictate what the best platform to start would be. Without knowing your market or idea, this is impossible to say.

Both mobile and desktop apps have their benefits and traffic/search opportunities, but only if targeted correctly.

I am not sure if this helps, but without more info this is the best I can do. I am willing to chat more, if you would like.

How do I define a client avatar for people or businesses requiring branding and design services?

The avatar is going to be defined by your ideal customer. Your ideal customer needs to be defined by:

-The market they are serving
-Business size -- solo entrepreneur, 3-5 employees, 10+ employees. etc.
-Specify the service that you want to provide: web site design, logo design, offline brochures, etc.

Always, always narrow down as far as you can and then build from there. You never want to be the business that says: 'We specialize in everything' Because we all know that this means you are not any good at anything.

I am not sure if you are even sure yet what you want to offer never mind who you want to offer it to, but here's a quick thought:

If I was a web designer looking for clients I would niche down to a tight niche, then determine the avatar of my ideal client and then find where they are -- finding them is easy once you know who they are. ;)

Example: Web design -> WordPress-> Mobile responsive -> Chiropractors

This is still really vague and based on not knowing you or your business at all, but hopefully it will at least get you unstuck enough to keep moving ahead.
