Using Linux on the desktop and on servers. Let's talk about the most widely used server operating system today and how you can use it to power your online infrastructure.

On the desktop I tend to use Fedora and on servers either CentOS or Red Hat.

I have previously used Ubuntu and in various versions but moved across to Fedora to more closely stick to the kind of Linux that is most usually installed on the servers that we work with for clients.

It would be fair to say I'm a massive fan of the system and have found the ability to write bespoke BASH scripts to handle all manner of tasks is invaluable and very powerful - from simply changing my desktop background (http://edmondscommerce.github.io/gnome-shell/cron-script-to-change-gnome-shell-wallpaper.html) through to performing automated deployments on live web servers.

Magento (Community and Enterprise)

I am a certified Magento developer and have been working with it since before version 1.

These days our agency works mostly with Magento, lead largely by the high demand for expertise in the platform.

It's powerful but also challenging with a very large and often complex code base.

Years of experience have allowed us to become really quite skillful and knowledgeable on the platform.

Do I really need to use Magento for my marketplace?

I'm surprised other people are giving you concrete answers as it is impossible to say.

How much have you invested in building the current ROR based system?

Are the developers happy to code with both or are they simply steering you towards the technology they know?

Magento is a great platform. Extensions are a double edged sword, they can be very good and save a lot of effort. Likewise there are some terrible extensions out there. The cumulative effect of adding lots of extensions can be really bad as well.

Ultimately, you are likely to get what you pay for, no matter which platform you go with.

How would you explain GitHub (or Git) to People that are not programmers or programmers that used SVN before?

I sometimes explain it as a bit like the "undo/redo" history in an application like word - but on an entire folder of files. That's an explanation of version control anyway.

The distributed elements is a bit hard to find a useful analogy for, there is only so far you can dumb it down.
