In my role, I work closely with nurse managers to make sure our staff have what they need to succeed, which includes mentoring staff, being encouraging, and inspiring, and also being able to have what may seem like daunting or difficult conversations but really is just addressing issues or conflict in a productive way.

I develop, coordinate, and facilitate trainings to provide our staff with the knowledge and skills they need to provide the best possible patient care. I also meet with staff one on one to provide individualized at-the-elbow support. Knowing there are so many different learning styles, it’s key to have a sense of how best to provide education to everyone. We also have regulatory requirements that must be met so taking all of these moving pieces into account when creating and implementing education are key.

In order to keep our doors open, we are required to be in compliance with state and federal regulations. This requires staying current on those regulations and being able to change our practices when needed. In the realm of psychiatric care in the state of Colorado, there were quite a few changes that went into effect this year and as with any other year, it required closely reading and understanding the changes, rigorous review of our existing policies and processes with subsequent changes to current ones and creation of some others. Auditing also plays a large role to ensure we are indeed in adherence so we can provide education around anything we need to tighten up on so we’re rock solid when regulatory agencies come to do their audits with a fine tooth comb.
