Entrepreneur turned investor. Co-founder AbeBooks (sold to Amazon), early-stage investor through @versiononevc (50+ investments, including Indiegogo, Flurry, Frank & Oak, Indochino, Wattpad, Edmodo). Husband and dad of 4.
I like to help entrepreneurs think through their business strategy - how to scale a company, hire the right people to take it to the next level or what kind of investors to get on board.
I am a product guy at heart. I like thinking through product strategy and how to create the most amount of value for a customer.
One of my investment areas is Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and I have made half a dozen of investments in that space (Clio, Jobber, Frontdesk, Unbounce, Top Hat Monocle). Happy to share sales & marketing strategies and discuss business models.
I co-founded a marketplace business (JustBooks / ABeBooks - sold to Amazon in 2008) and have invested in half a dozen B2B and B2C marketplaces since (e.g. Indiegogo, tindie, GroupTalent, Clarity). Happy to share my experiences as entrepreneurs and investor in this space.
I have successfully raised money as a startup founder and I see hundreds of startups fundraising every year as a VC. Happy to share best practices.
Besides SaaS and marketplaces / platforms I focus on e-commerce as an investment area. I have made investments in different areas from vertically integrated commerce (Indochino, Frank & Oak, Julep) to MLM models (Chloe & Isabel) to commerce marketplaces (tindie).
You usually only recognize the commissions as revenues and use the term "Gross Merchandise Value" (GMV) to describe the size of the marketplace (value of all transactions going through the site)
Heard good things about GoodsCloud (www.goodscloud.com)
Build a great product and get some early traction. Assemble a top-notch term of co-founders. Understand your space like nobody else. Be good at telling a great story and communicating your vision.
My call with Boris helped me realize some flaws in our strategy and my approach to monetization, and now I know what I need to do to fix them for better network effects. Thanks Boris!
Very Succinct. Was a wonderful use of time and great call.
Boris gave me at ton of GREAT feedback on our Pitch Deck. I feel like it's gonna really help us with Fundraising. He also pointed some critical flaws in the business model, that we'll need to address. And since Clarity.fm's call quality was so bad, he was so gracious to give me his direct phone number. Thanks a lot Boris!
Bad connection on his end of the phone, half assed advice. Learned nothing useful.
Excellent call, Boris is incredibly knowledgeable and provided some excellent advice and guidance. Highly recommended.
Boris provided a great example of similar marketplaces and the dynamics behind pricing strategies, the pros/cons, and tradeoffs. I had similar thoughts - Boris is a great sounding board and exactly the type of "gut-check" I needed.
Thoughtful advice, actionable next steps.
Helpful! Hope this was the first of many conversations with Boris!
Impactful feedback in a short call. Highly recommended.
Boris is the real deal - the best call I've had and worth every penny - if not more.
Very helpful conversation. Provided feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of my business model and offered advice on how to bridge those gaps and what pitfalls to avoid.
