Billy Patterson frequently spent much time with my department working to understand our technology challenges. As a liaison between the Information Technology team and the Business Unit, he demonstrated determination and desire to improve operations and leveraged his technical expertise and numerous business relationships to continuously deliver results. I worked with Billy when he was a member of the MIS Executive Forum at the University of Alabama representing Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa. This is a very unique alliance of senior IT executives and the MIS program that provide insight and assistance necessary to ensure the continued relevance and excellance of the University's MIS program.

As part of that program, I worked with Billy, on four separate IT projects for Nucor steel as Faculty Sponsor of our student teams. I have found Billy to be the consummate professional with a very clear insight of the role of IT as a value provider to the business. He has demonstrated far-sighted leadership in driving the transformation of the IT organization and while the these changes can be quite stressful, Billy always maintained a calm outward demeanor that earned him the respect of his internal staff and provided a positive influence on our students as they were preparing for their professional careers.

Billy Patterson was Manager of Technical Services for Pen Holdings when I was managing the engineering department for a Pen coal mining subsidiary, Elk Horn Coal Corporation. Elk Horn had no IT department of its own, and Billy was responsible for supplying us with IT services. He never failed to provide our company with the tools and technical support that were necessary to automate routine business processes and to complete high priority engineering projects with tight deadlines. Billy’s engineering background gives him a business perspective that few IT managers possess. Billy Patterson was my IT manager at Lehigh Cement Company for almost five years. During that time I observed that he was extremely honest and trustworthy, qualities that are extremely important in someone who is entrusted with running the Information Technology department at any size organization.

He's always been a family man, and he made sure our department was one where we worked very hard during the work day, yet always took good care of our own families.
