Frederico Menino is an international education scholar, senior philanthropic adviser and diplomatic liaison whose work bridges higher education policy, academic freedom, and global cooperation across five continents. Since 2023, Frederico has served as Senior Program Officer for Higher Education at the Open Society Foundations, where he helped to steward the Foundations' largest grant making portfolio – including the Open Society University Network (OSUN) and a pioneering initiative to defend threatened scholars and foster academic freedom worldwide. From 2017 to 2023, Frederico was a member of the inaugural team at Schwarzman Scholars, he led Tsinghua University’s engagement strategy in Latin America, Africa-MENA and Europe. Before that, he served as Education Attaché for the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE-Itamaraty), supervising a $4.2 billion scholarship program and nearly 4,500 Brazilian fellows at American universities. His essays on universities, academic freedom, and knowledge diplomacy have appeared in The Guardian, Project Syndicate, and University World News. A tri-national citizen of Brazil, Italy, and the United States, he holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from The New School for Social Research, an M.Sc. in Political Science from the University of São Paulo, and completed research fellowships at Harvard University and the University of Sussex.
