Sarah Peck Communications Specialist at SWA Group

San Francisco, California
I write, design, tell stories, swim, run and explore the world. Endless project starter, do-er, silly-maker. I write about cities, psychology, people, and getting things done. Graduate of Penn's Design School in Landscape Architecture + Urban Design; built the website www.landscapeurbanism.com about the future of cities and I write about the need for a better understanding of what Landscape Architecture is and does. Also the brain behind the website "It Starts With," about the psychology of getting things done. Formerly an NCAA All-American and currently an open-water swimmer. How do you form the words to talk about someone who has fundamentally altered the course of your life? Sarah and I first connected through her writing and eventually began communicating on Twitter and over the phone. Over one of the shortest but most intense months of my life, Sarah guided me along the journey of writing and recognizing my personal narrative. She was funny but firm, smart yet humble and treated me as if I was the most important thing in her world. Her ability to connect combined with her amazing skills in writing and story telling are a powerful combination that led, in my case, to a professional and personal breakthrough that I had been searching for. I would highly recommend Sarah to be a part of your universe - she is what this world needs more of.

I have worked with Sarah as an Associate Editor under her direction at LandscapeUrbanism.com, and Sarah is a born leader. She has a history of aiming high by setting extremely ambitious goals, then tapping into her network, leveraging contacts, and working tirelessly to make them happen. The history of the LandscapeUrbanism.com website is a case in point.

In starting the website, Sarah aimed to have not just one component, but three parts moving at three different speeds (a design blog, an academic journal, and a set of discussion forums and auto-updating features), and then expanded this into a fourth section while working on the first three. She balanced website development, keeping a focus on the long-term vision of the functioning of the website as a whole, while focusing on the day-to-day work of building the inaugural Journal issue. Sarah manages her time incredibly effectively, follows up with people religiously, and doesn't let tasks drop off her list. At the same time, she seems to always find time to go for a run or a swim, or meet with friends face-to-face.

Sarah works relentlessly, but understands the workflow and psychology of contributors and colleagues. This serves her extremely well in her role as Editor-in-Chief, where she has been able to push contributors to submit pieces on deadline without nagging, and to motivate tired co-editors to stick to their schedules while providing guidance and support. She has grown the readership by reaching out persistently and understanding the rhythms of the Internet. At the same time, she is quick to ask her friends and colleagues for their opinions, polling around to find the best decision rather than assuming that she knows best. She motivates with perseverance and humility, and I can't think of any other person who would be able to keep the wheels turning on a project as complex and fast-moving as this website that she has founded.

Sarah is one of the warmest and kindest people I know. I may have only met her briefly in person, on a wonderful summer's day in London, but the relationship we have built online and through social media is a genuine and supportive one. Sarah has great ideas and never fails to inspire me with her blogs and thoughts. She has a unique gift in writing and combines her passions marvelously and authentically to work which she gives her all to and excels without the shadow of a doubt. If you have the chance to work with her, she will be a change-maker and a reliable and incredibly valuable asset to your team or life.

Sarah was an outstanding scholar-athlete for our nationally ranked women's swimming team. A four-year national qualifier and All-American in the sprint freestyles, Sarah also excelled in the classroom having earned the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship following her graduation from Denison. Sarah distinguished herself not only with her accomplishments but with her strong work ethic, high degree of integrity, and vivid imagination--traits that provided her with a strong foundation from which to push as she strived to reach her full potential in the pool and classroom.
