MenuWhat are some actionable tactics that new content marketing programs can use to build distribution?
My startup just launched a blog, and I am trying to build an audience. What distribution tactics will be effective?
Answers
Start by contributing a majority of your content to other blogs that already have an audience. (Also, create a really kick-ass bio with a link to your twitter handle and blog.) By gaining visibility in an already established community will make it easier for you to gain new quality subscribers and authority.
It is a process that takes time. Don't expect unique traffic to blow the roof off overnight, it just won't happen. Make sure you are consistently publishing really REALLY great content that people want to share. Make sure it passes your internal 'F*ck Yeah' filter (http://onboardly.com/content-marketing/why-you-need-great-content-marketing/#.Usa5NWRDskI) *shameless plug*, and really nurture your community.
Consider other content forms to help with growth, like:
- Slideshare presentations
- guides, eBooks, whitepapers
- webinars and podcasts
Best of luck and enjoy the journey!
Renee's answer is spot on. Trying to guest blog on places that already have traffic will help. Often times you can link back to other blog posts/content you've created if relevant to the article.
The biggest tip is to see content as a framework for many types of deliverables. For example, recently we created an ebook called "Don't Leak Leads: How To Identify Leaks & Get More Customers". http://go.reachlocal.com/DontLeakLeads_request.html.
This content became a series of blog posts, a successful webinar series, multiple infographics, slideshare presentations, and videos. Because we focus so much on education, we also created http://dontleakleads.com. Again all of this was repackaging and rethinking a content framework around how to get more leads.
From a channel perspective, this gave us content across FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Slideshare, YouTube, and Pinterest and for social media ads, updates, and even pinterest.
Then leveraging a content calendar you can plan when all this happens. Our entire goal is to get someone to fill out a lead form that enters folks into a 21 email behaviorally driven lead nurturing program.
I recommend reading Content Marketing Institute and CopyBlogger.com.
Best of luck!

Some great suggestions here already! In addition to guest posting, I'd recommend optimizing your posts for SEO. If you're consistent, this will really pay off over time, and you'll get far more bang from your archives as they catch on in search.
Even if you're not an SEO guru, you can take simple steps to improve your SEO. The easiest one is using keywords in your headlines. Lots of other simple ideas in this free webinar: http://alexisgrant.com/webinar-seo/
For some of the blogs we manage, we've also established syndication partners -- big outlets like AOL and Business Insider that want our content and send traffic to us in return. That's something to consider once you've gotten in the habit of providing awesome content.
Good luck!

All good responses. I have one question for you. Have you developed a marketing plan for your start-up? A good strategy will identify who your target markets are so you can find the most appropriate channels for your tactics. To capture new business leads, you want to both contribute, and participate in, the "right" online spaces.
All fantastic answers. Another way to help distribute your content is to create a widget that your content feeds into. Then others can place the widget on their blogs and websites. Another idea is to use Google plus. It is a fantastic way to spread your content globally and build an audience. You can also build your own community. Once this builds, you can schedule events, emails, etc. with ease.
Good Luck, and best regards,
Teddy

What are the content marketing best practices of converting blog visits into signups?
Having a smart call to action at the end of each blog post is generally a good practice. Make it stand out, and make sure to add value to the visitor by signing up. I strongly recommend A/B testing (also called split-testing) your sign up call to action. That's the only way for you to improve the results of the signup rate. In regards to the conversion rate it's extremely difficult to predict. Depends on your value proposition, quality of content, your industry and so much more. Best advice is just to get started and be smart about the a/b testing. If you are running Wordpress I can strongly recommend OptinMonster to manage your call to actions. Unlike other solutions you won't have to pay a fortune, and it's very good. I'd also like to throw some flame to the fire on the ever ongoing discussions about popups. They receive a lot of flak, but are extremely effective. You can expect up to 200% more signups by using exit intent popups. Again - make sure to offer value to the visitor.FH

How do I get funded startups to buy Content Creation services?
I've been working with funded startups for a couple years as a content marketing consultant and my business has grown significantly year over year. Relationships are the king of generating new business in this space. It's important to become a key part of the startup community in your area and attend events whenever possible. Meet people, grab coffees, provide value through follow up emails and speak on the value of content creation as often as conference managers and planners will allow. The second approach that truly has helped me grow my business is the creation of content that helps startups do these things on their own. For example, I've written a Content Marketing Guide for Entrepreneurs (Standoutguide.com) along with a series of blog posts & Slideshows highlighting how content marketing works for startups. Last year, I wrote a blog post specifically about B2B Startups and how content marketing can help them and then emailed it to a handful of marketing executives at a couple startups. I ended up getting meetings with each of them and working with 4/5 of them. Finally, you need to develop a trustworthy brand. I couldn't count on my fingers how many times I've heard of marketers lose opportunities because they didn't manage their own accounts appropriately. Whether it's the language they use on their website or the way they carry themselves on social media - It's the little details that differentiate the best from the rest. If you have any other questions - Feel free to give me a ring! Always happy to help fellow entrepreneurs achieve success.RS

What is the best way to write blog articles to maximise SEO benefit? I know the needs of my audience, will address them but also like SEO traffic.
Great question, To get traffic from SEO it must be done diligently. And the best way to do that is from a well structured article. The key things to remember that will help your pages rank well: Keyword Headings Put your most important keywords here. They must be coherent, simple yet descriptive. If your blog allows you to insert H1 headings into your article, do so. Don't cram too much info into keywords though, Search engines are smart and recognize when someone is spamming. Maybe do a bit of research using 'Google Keyword Tool' In Google Adwords and see if your keywords are popular search terms. Links and Back links Include links to relevant info when you can, the more credible sources your website links to, the better appeal it has to search engines. Also include back links. Back links are links to a location somewhere that also features a link going directly back to your site, these also give your article good standing. Duplicate Content Try not to say anything twice, and if you do use different terminology. But the main focus here is to always write fresh content. If the content of your article has been written word for word somewhere else first how can yours possibly be more credible? Also write often, the more frequent you post articles, the more frequently your site will be "crawled" by bots. If you do this well your listing can only rise. Be Unique and have the Best Info This entails just doing what you do and doing it well. It might be difficult to compete with other websites if the topic your discussing is already covered in great detail. The best position to be in is one of having information that everyone wants but cannot find anywhere else. A good tip for this is finding a specific niche that suits you well to draw in traffic to your general topic. Hope this helps you get started. Blog strategy for company with two target markets?
If there are any general similarities or common ground between the two target markets you can accomplish this goal with a single blog using target market-specific keywords and category names. I have a client who is in the home improvement industry, installing replacement roofs, siding, windows, doors, etc. People who need a new roof for example, more often search with keywords and phrases focused on their specific need rather than something general like home improvement contractor. We use recently completed projects as the fodder for content-based marketing. Blog posts include the town and/or neighborhood, county and state where the work was performed for geo-targeted keywords. We then include a generous sprinkling of "roof," "new roof," etc. along with product-specific words like the type and brand of shingles installed. We also include a description of the initial problem the homeowner was experiencing that caused them to contact us initially, such as "leaking" or "leaky roof." We do the same thing with all of his other product areas and get a great deal of traffic. One last trick is to use many of these same keywords as blog categories. I have seen great success with this tactic. If what I've described makes sense to you and you'd like to learn more, please click "Call Frank" below so we can discuss further. To your success, FrankFF

What is the best way to find an expert SEO consultant? (Not a company).
I would google bunch of SEO related keywords (like "how to rank high on Google" or something like that).. see who pops up in the SERPs. If SEO people/company can't SEO themselves.. that tells you a lot about them. You don't take diet tips from overweight people. You don't take investment tips from homeless people. Don't take SEO tips from people who don't SEO themselves to get business. My 2 cents.TK
