I have a sales, coaching and banking background. How can I find out what it would be like to work at Facebook or linked in and how to get my foot in the door?

Your best bet would be to connect with a few folks in the talent acquisition departments at each company on LinkedIn. Once you are connected, you can follow up with a kind note asking for more information on employment opportunities and advice on getting started in those organizations. They will be able to best guide you are areas of the organization that you might be interested in working and what types of positions to look out for - as well as the types of things they look for in new hires.
Go through your network. Do you know anyone that works at FB and LI? Do your connections know people that work at FB and LI (second-degree connections)? Chances are, you have a lot more connections at FB and LI than you might think. Ask your connections to introduce you to the folks they know that work at FB and LI and then schedule 30-min informational interviews with these folks. You now have a connection at FB/LI and can ask them what it's like to work there.
My experience says - it is a waste of time in those platforms. Can be used for getting acquainted or information, but for business needs a lot of time and patience.
The first thing you do upon starting at Facebook is go to a boot-camp where you learn about Facebook internal systems, architecture, and code so you can contribute early. This is not to say that Facebook does not have, say, data scientists, but everything revolves much more around product. LinkedIn has great product focus too, but the overall mix of roles and skills is more diverse. In any case, payments are not about innovating but leveraging market position to extract shares of revenues.
LinkedIn is rather unique among leading tech companies in terms of the diversity of its business model. LinkedIn has been great in establishing leading position as an elite source of top talent. That is a great position to be in as their customers are not driven by measuring ROI but instead perceive they must participate, or they would be losing out to their competition in recruiting the best talent. On top of all that, LinkedIn revenue has been growing faster and their management of investor expectations has been just about perfect.
Facebook has been less successful, at least initially, in managing investors’ expectations, by mismanaging their IPO and initial growth expectations. LinkedIn timing for IPO was better and their current, as well as eventual prospects for growth are better. Their current market capitalization is $28B, while Facebook is at $218B. For Facebook, that would mean almost $1 trillion valuation, something never seen in history while LinkedIn would be around $110B.
Another set of differences comes from the nature of their data. Facebook's social graph is at the heart of their business, but not at the core of their business model nor even product. LinkedIn has been innovative in launching a quality news feed themselves but that is not at the core of their offerings.

Catch 22? Not at all...You need to project your weakness ( according to you) as a strength. Be open and bold about your online business. It is work experience and not a career break! You take that experience to the companies who are in the same line of business and you are very exciting for them. Please dont waste your time with recruiters. They have fixated ideas and mandates and can rarely identify or appreciate real talent. You need to get rid off your baggage you are carrying in your head. Your non-profit work would never become a business as your target customers cant afford to pay. Keep it that way and continue doing good karma. Join relevant LinkedIn groups based on your business and connect with like minded people. Target businesses in the same domain and directly contact them seeking appointments with hiring managers. Go as an entrepreneur and explore synergies. There is no shame in saying that your business did not work. But analyze why. If you feel that it is only because you did not promote it actively, then please go ahead and promote the hell out of it. Being an entrepreneur is the best work experience any employer can get as you would know the entire business cycle. You never know, your promotion, done in the right way may actually create more jobs!FS

How can a failed 40 year old tech entrepreneur find a job at a startup?
Carolyn's points are spot-on. Tactically speaking, I would suggest that you make contact with the recruiting partners at the top VCs. Greylock, a16z and others have partners specifically focused on helping their portfolio companies with recruiting. Cold calls and emails with a "I'm an entrepreneur that has built two companies, one of which grew to X in Y time, and the other grew to X in Y time. I'm interested in exploring opportunities within your portfolio who are looking to scale-up their growth and sales" should get some discussions initiated with these recruiting partners. Stage of company matters too. You're more likely to find a fit with a company who is post a $1m seed raise and already scaling-up. I'd also think a lot about what role you're interviewing for. The problem with a generalized entrepreneurial background is that it can be perceived as "jack of all trades, master of none." So in order to improve your resume, you might be best to be 2nd to a great growth lead or be the first hire under a VP Sales. Also, I'd suggest that you research the ages of the founders. If they are under 30, they are more likely to be biased to hire younger talent, but over 30, that bias often swings the other way. I'd recommend you call Carolyn if you want help on how best to present yourself to prospective employers. Quitting job with after 5+ years and no references because I had to sue my employer. How can I manage this situation with my future employers?
Remember having a friend in a similar situation. This was my advice in that moment: -Make a list of the top 50 clients you had in the consulting firm, choose those which you had a close relationship and can actually talk about you (not fake it) -Call them and ask them if they believe you did a good job and if they were satisfied with your services. If the answer is yes, then here you have two options 1-Ask them if you can use them as reference. Don't talk about your ex employer. He doesn't matter. This is between you and them. Don't talk bad about him/her, it doesn't help. If they say yes, you are up to a start 2-If you ask and they say no, then you can make a decision. You can put them anyways and they will be called by your interviewer (not necessary they would talk to him or say good things, it's a risk) or you can just name the companies without a persons name or contact info Hope this helped! If you could go back in time to my age (18) what would you do differently?
Erghh...tough to answer because at 18 I know I didn't listen to many people...and I thought I was a "nice kid." A lot of this stuff is learned through trial and error, and this saying (which has been attributed to many people from Mark Twain on down) is accurate: “Good judgement is the result of experience and experience the result of bad judgement.” So at least in this model, you have to go through the bad to understand the good. I'll say this, from my own experience: The time will pass. In three blinks of an eye you will be 40. I know it seems like a far away point now, but trust me, time accelerates as you get older. Each summer you plan to learn how to sail a small boat. Each summer passes and you have to work, you can't take the time off to do the course, the sunny days pass by. Suddenly you are 30. Blink. The time will pass. If you want to get good at something--business, music, art, whatever--start now. Persist. The time passes, quicker and quicker, whether you like it or not, and if you stick with whatever it is, you will develop that skill... ...and suddenly, in two blinks of an eye, you will realize you are a professional. I have perhaps 25 functional years left in the workforce. The full force of this is in my face every waking minute. Be the person you want to be--or be a flake. That is fate's demand. Don't be too concerned about money at your age. You can build it. Live beneath your means. I didn't, through my mid-20s, and it bothers me to this day. Put a percentage of your income aside every paycheck. Then you can take vacations when the opportunity arises, buy stuff on sale that you really want when it comes up, take that sailing course and get started on the road to enjoyment and perhaps mastery. Don't let circumstances rule you. Need to get out of work early to take that course? Talk to your boss about it. Start a side business now, if you're so inclined. You can make all the mistakes early and it won't cost you much...and you can be a pro at 28. Because, trust me, the time will fly by. Make the things you want to happen...happen. Don't be too interested in pleasing other people. It doesn't pay off. They will simply take advantage and then take more. Take care of yourself first. If a choice comes down to doing something you know is important to your life, or pleasing someone else and suppressing your desire or interest, choose yourself. You can always get another job. Speaking of jobs...don't let anyone tell you that "you have to pay your dues" or "you have to have more experience." That is the Chicken Little way of the world and those people do not know what they are talking about. Someone told me I couldn't be a factory manager when I was 24. I quit, and within 4 months was a plant manager. People do not know what they are talking about. Even me. Trust yourself. Find your own truth. There are MANY ways to success--not just one. Not just the single one advertised on television. You can figure it out your way, and you'll probably be a lot happier. Oh, and invest in some solid real estate as soon as you can to get a passive income going.JK
