MenuWould a Pinterest posting service for business be a successful side hustle?
Answers
I don't think being Pinterest-only is too specific. It is an overlooked, yet valuable, social media platform that most don't know how to effectively use for their business.
When you're setting out to be an expert, you need to be prepared to answer what makes you different than the competition. In this space, I know Tailwind has a large following and does a lot to expand their territory. If I am your prospective client, I want to know what makes you better/worse/the same as them.
You need to answer why posting on Pinterest is valuable and worth the time and expense to the brand. How do you measure success? How do you prove ROI?
While you may have these answered in your own mind, or it may be a "Duh" moment, you need to know how to articulate that to your customer. They may know that "Pinterest is where they need to be" yet have no realistic idea on *why*.
As the expert, it is your job to coach them through that process.
Finally, you need to have your ideal client persona dialed in. Not everyone will be your idea client, and your marketing and language should reflect this. The way you market your services should allow viewers to self-qualify AND self-DISqualify themselves. Be sure you know who you can help and who you can't (or don't want to). This will further your positioning as an expert - and experts get paid big money for their knowledge.

I don't think it's limiting. It will probably be tricky to get your foot in the door, but if you can offer a real value you stand as good a chance as any.
With over 1m businesses using Pinterest, I think that's a great idea and don't be afraid to be focused.
In my experience, your prospects will have 3 pain points you can address:
1. Creating and posting great photos in the best size and with the best tags to support findability. (+2bn searches per month at Pinterest)
2. Sustaining this (most businesses struggle to maintain their posting schedule)
3. providing lead generation reports.
And I'd also focus on businesses whose product or service offering is best communicated visually. (e.g. avoid law firms)
Good luck.
happy to advise.

What are best strategies to sell LED light tubes and industrial lighting/lamps online a) in general and b) on amazon?
I'd ask Rocco Baldassarre. He is the best online marketing consultant I've ever seen and can surely give you concrete advice. Said that, my advice would be a) your own e-commerce store so you can drive traffic to it without losing money on commissions b) learn from best selling products (you can see sales ranks of competing products if you register as an amazon affiliate marketer; it's free) and copy their structure, split test regularly Hope it helps!CM

What would be a good answer for describing the size of your company to a potential prospect who might consider you too small to service their account?
What an awesome question! Businesses are running into this issue more frequently that ever, good news is, it can be done. Having worked on projects with oDesk, Fox Television and Wikipedia and having a very very small staff, it's certainly possible. Here's how I say it in our pitches to larger organizations: "Tractive West provides tailored video production services to organizations of all sizes. We have developed a distributed workflow using the latest digital tools. We leverage our small creative and management team with a world wide network of creative professionals, that means we can rapidly scale to meet the demands of any project while keeping our infrastructure and overhead lightweight and sustainable." Cheers and best of luck.SM

How does my startup hire an affordable marketing expert?
I don't even know how to answer this. Do you know what the difference between McDonalds and the local burger joint that is filing for bankruptcy is? It's marketing. McDonalds is worth billions of dollars not because of the quality of their food, but because of their marketing. Marketing is not an expense. A janitor is an expense. Your computer is an expense. Marketing is an INVESTMENT. Would you shop around for the cheapest heart surgeon? Of course not. Because you would likely end up dead. Why, then, do you shop around for a marketing expert? Are you ok with your company going bankrupt? Is that worth the small savings to you? No. Of course not. Hire someone who is good at marketing. Hire someone who knows what they are doing. Buy yourself a Lamborghini with your profit the first quarter. Get a beach house in hawaii. Grab a yacht. Or, try to find your business the cheapest heart surgeon you can and then spend the next five years wondering why such a solid business idea failed in the first 6 months. I'm passionate about this exact topic because all those statistics you read about "70% of businesses failing in two years" are solely because of horrible marketing.AM

How did Snapchat boast a solid user base within a short period of time, compared to Facebook and Twitter?
I've been in the picture messaging space for a while now with my apps Lutebox (voted one of London's top ten most loved apps) and now Click Messenger. I've written a few articles about the space including a recent post about the Future of Mobile Messaging. Snapchat started out as an app called Picaboo, which pretty much did what it does now (prior to the latest update with chat and video calling). They quickly rebranded but saw a little uptake in user numbers and had quite low downloads for several months. Then around Christmas 2011 one of the founders' mom had told her friend about the app, who told her kid and her kid basically then spread the word throughout their high school in L.A. That was what really blew up their download numbers as it spread across teenagers at local high schools. As far as I know they didn't advertise in the early days, relied solely on word of mouth. Also it is assumed that they have a solid user base. Comparatively speaking, their user base may be in the low tens of millions, which may a great base of users, but nowhere even close to being as big as Facebook or Twitter. I'd be happy to speak about this in more detail or about the picture messaging landscape and what I believe to be the future of mobile messaging.AA

What is a good scope of work for a marketing and PR department?
Build a body of work in the form of a blog. Much depends on the size and scope of your company, but branded journalism can really make a huge difference.....AW
