MenuIf I am trying to start an unlimited design services business, how can I figure out pricing?
I wanted to start a Design Agency offering unlimited Graphic Design Services. I have already seen others with the same service available now, but they only accept minor projects. I wanted to do real Graphic Design services. I wanted to seek advise on how I would price it. Then I also wanted to offer a startup package for startups.

Do in-depth competition research. Find people doing exactly what you do and call/email and ask for pricing. Make sure you have exact specs for the "job" mapped out and use the same exact details for everyone you call.
If you can't find anyone at all who does what you want to do you should dig deep and find out why nobody does it. There are probably good reasons.
Excellent question! The only way for this to work would be to have strict definitions around the term unlimited. Netflix had unlimited DVD rental in the early days and this only worked because you couldn't get the next DVD until you had sent back the current DVD.
Unlimited may work for larger projects if:
- used a word to define a short task (could be task, job or a more creative name)
- behind the scenes have a set amount of time for a job
- work out the maths on your pricing per month, less profit needing to equal the maximum amount of hours that someone at X dollars per hour may be working. Like insurance, you could underestimate the hours a little with the thought that not everyone is going to send work at full capacity but this is a risk.
- when a client submits longer work, have someone split up the job into milestone jobs
- have these completed in a defined SLA timeframe i.e. "jobs are completed 12 hours following your previous job"
I hope this helps.
Graphics Design is the most creative Profession. if you can provide to business of design. I will recommended that this is the perfect point for business.
about your configure pricing. don't worry which creativity you will get more values.
you will decide after making your business.

Very tricky. I never heard of this. I hope you can work out a profit in there somewhere when you do figure out pricing, Unlimited scares me.
What about turning the issue upside down. What if you offered defined services vs. unlimited, but you asked your clients to pay what they think the service is worth to them?
Now that's a service worth talking about.

Should I trade equity for design if design and aesthetics are really important to the value of my brand?
I would not trade equity for design work. Unless this person will actually become a part of your team and create enough value to warrant equity. Otherwise it is short sighted to trade equity for something you need very early on just to launch. I'm sure your design/brand will evolve over time and this person will have put in a minor amount of work compared to what it will take to launch and continue a successful company. Additionally, you may be putting too much weight on your brand and not enough on what you're actually selling? However it is hard to give a more detailed answer without knowing what exactly you are doing and how detailed and ongoing the design work is. I would love to help answer your question, but need a little more detail on what exactly it is you do and what type of design/branding work you need.DJ

Should I hire full time designers, or should I freelance design talent to save overheard? What are the pros and cons to each?
I agree it really depends on what you are trying to achieve. It can take sometime to source the right person to do the job. I disagree that you should only outsource to a freelancer if you have a one off project. My designer is a freelancer and I have been using her for several years because I like her style and she is very fast and efficient so I end up paying a lot less for the work and there is usually very few edits. I think that for any business it is worthwhile investing in creating a good relationship with any member of your team. If the work you required isn't a full time role, then hiring a freelancer makes a lot of sense because you can build a loyal and trusting relationship with them and therefore depend on them to deliver.LP

I am a new fish in the User experience design for mobile application business. Should I learn web design and html?
If app design is the only thing you'd like to do, then I'd say spend all your time and focus developing UI/UX expertise for mobile. In many developing nations around the world, smart devices are giving people their first exposure to the Internet. The way they search, browse, buy, and otherwise behave online hasn't been profoundly shaped by desktop computing (and all the extra real estate that larger screens afford). All that to say, I've begun to think of UI/UX design for mobile as a distinct discipline. Many fine web designers find it very difficult to make the transition over to mobile: almost like fiction writers trying to write poetry. Starting with web and moving to mobile may actually handicap you. But if you start by learning to be economical and use limited mobile real estate to its best effect, then you'll probably be a better web designer (if you decide to grow into it later) for it. Hope this helps, AustinAC

What is the best place to find freelance designers?
You'll find that to be the case on any outsourcing site. Focus on the reviews and comments left on a designer's profile. This will give you an idea of the quality of their work before contacting them. Further, check out LinkedIn and search for "freelance designer" or "freelance graphic design" and sift through the results. Good luck! They're out there!SN
