My husband's making a career change after seven years as an investigative accountant -- he's gaining the skills to work as a developer. He's taking a part-time back-end course but treating it as full time, spending his days learning to code.
We're trying to figure out the next best step after he finishes this part-time course. How should he bridge the gap from not-quite-beginner to ready-for-a-job-as-a-junior-developer? Another course? Continue to learn on his own? What are the best things he can do at this point to set himself up to land a position as a developer?

Courses are useful but he should practice applying what he learns. Develop some things for fun! It's a great way to get some experience.
