MenuHow was Twitter able to become a leading company without attracting serious competition. It seems their service could have been copied easily.
I don't think they had any patents protecting them, etc.
Answers
Agreed. Pownce and FriendFeed were both hailed as Twitter competitors in the early days. In 2008 Twitter was consistently plagued by downtime as they had trouble scaling. However, the service was simple and easy to use and they did a great job getting early digital influencers and celebs onboard evangelizing the platform. When Twitter first got started they also had a suggested user list and recommended lots of famous people and digital influencers to follow. This created a bit of a self-fulfilling prophesy - those on the list would evangelize twitter helping to funnel even more people in and boosting their own popularity, etc.
People thought twitter would fail to monetize so nobody wanted to copy something that had no idea how it could work either.
There was competition in the microblogging space and there still is, Twitter just had the "it" factor. People adopted it instead of other services. Developers adopted it instead of other services. The search features were better.
They just had the right mix of factors to beat everyone else.
It's less about the service and more about who's on the service.
On April 17, 2009, at 10:11 AM, Oprah Winfrey tweeted: "HI TWITTERS . THANK YOU FOR A WARM WELCOME. FEELING REALLY 21st CENTURY ."
And that was it.
Twitter servers started crashing every fifteen minutes. A piece of artwork known as the Fail Whale was a constant fixture preventing the rest of us from carrying on our early adopter conversations.
Then, other celebrities started taking it seriously.
Then, journalists started showing up.
There are a lot of other services that work like Twitter. Some of them are even free and open source. Some, like App.net, have paid membership levels.
They just don't have the same people on it as Twitter, and that makes all the difference.
Social media has changed how the business world operates. Twitter remains one of the most famous social media sites in the world and continues to grow at an accelerated pace. In fact, Twitter has now become a medium where one can launch their own brand and establish their business. Its other activity is its App Development which makes it convenient for its users to access the service through their mobile devices. Their maintenance of user data thereby protecting the privacy of those having legitimate accounts is also a valuable activity. Twitter’s first major resource is its own platform. It continues to evolve and adapt every year garnering the attention of new users along the way with its impressive reach. The Internet serves as the most important tool for Twitter to channel its services to its users. Access to its platform is of fundamental importance to its existence. It is used to secure more users and generate revenue every day.
Twitter’s revenue models tend to vary considering the constantly changing digital landscape. It amasses a generous amount of its revenue from its advertisements used mostly by companies and enterprises. Apart from the tweet itself, the entire Twitter account serves as a revenue generator for Twitter on its own level. Users scramble to click and participate in these hashtags thereby increasing more traffic for the site. This allows Twitter to accumulate more revenue for its website and thrive accordingly. Approximately 86 percent of total revenue comes from Advertisement. Many business models seek to increase their finances through advertisement, but only a handful like twitter or Uber have succeeded in doing so. The tweets it allows users to receive help these respective companies to reach out to a new customer and expand their base. Twitter users are exposed to different kinds of tweets on their feed. The point is to get more viewers and allow them to explore different ad campaigns for them to be marketed at an accelerated pace especially if they can go viral. This drives the viral element of the business and allows Twitter to become a marketing business entity of its own kind. Everything that trends online whether its entertainment, politics or business enters the hashtag section of Twitter. The more the users respond to whatever is trending online, the more they will be receptive to the product or service being offered. All promoted trends have their version of tweets that are in turn promoted by users. One viral tweet a day can cost 250,000 dollars in the US market.

How can I smoothly transition from full time worker to self-employment?
The ways I've done this in the past are 1) Find some customers that are willing to hire you (or your product) but know that you'll only be free nights & weekends to support/work with them. 2) Find a "partner" (co-founder or other) that's got a flexible schedule that can help build the business while you're at work. 3) Block out nights, mornings and weekends to build the business till you have enough orders to cover 50% of your salary. This might mean 7pm-11pm most nights, and 4 hours each day Sat & Sun. Make progress (sales $$$) and momentum. All that being said, it's risk reward. Sounds like you want to avoid taken the risk, and I get that .. but the upside is always smaller. Unless you put yourself in a position to have to succeed (ex: quitting your job) then you may never make the scary decisions that are required to build a company (like cold calling, going in debt, making a presentation, etc). I'm on company #5 with many other side projects started nights & weekends .. so I get it - but don't be afraid to bet on yourself and go all in.DM

What advice do you give to a 16 year old entrepreneur with a start up idea?
First, hat tip to you for being a young entrepreneur. Keep it up! If you have the funds to build out your MVP, hire a developer and possibly a mentor. If your idea is marketable, you don't need to give up equity by bringing in a co-founder. If this is your entrepreneurial venture, I would recommend you do retain a coach to help you see all the things you may not know. Have you already done your SWOT analysis? Have you identified your target market? What is your marketing plan? What will be your operating expenses? There are lots of questions to ask. If you would a free call, I'd be happy to help you in more detail. My startup just failed. What could I start to "immediately" generate $1,000/mo?
The quickest path to cash is almost always consulting. Be very specific about what it is you can offer. Don't just offer "business consulting". Find a niche and serve it. Reach out to your network, including friends and family and ask if they need or know of anyone who might want to hear about what your consulting has to offer. That will be way faster than trying to go at it from scratch or cold calling. If you call 100 people in your network this week, you will have a consulting gig within 3 weeks. Good luck, and let me know if you'd like advice on entering a digital marketing/lead generation consulting niche. I've grown from zero to $8,000 of monthly recurring payments in the last 40 days! I have this social media idea, but no coding skills. How do I get someone to do the coding (cant afford to pay them) and not give away half of my idea?
Dilip was very kind in his response. My answer might be a bit on the "tough love" side. But that's for you to decide. My intention, just for the record, is to help you (and those like you) on your path to success. And that starts with having a viable philosophy about entrepreneurial-ism and business. And I'm going to answer this because I get asked some form / version of this question very frequently from newcomers to entrepreneurial-ism. The scenario goes something like this: "I have a great idea. It's amazing, I love it, and I just KNOW it's gonna make me a ton of money. But I have no money right now so I can't afford to (fill in the blank with things like "to build it / create it / market it / etc" or "to hire the required staff needed to work in my business to sell it / develop it / etc"). And I don't want to tell anyone about my great idea because I'm worried someone will steal it and make MY million / billion dollars. But I can't afford to legally protect it either... So how do I launch without the skills to personally create the product AND no money to hire anyone else to do that either??" The answer is ... You don't. Look - let's be honest. All you have is an idea. Big deal. Really. I'm not saying it's not a good idea. I'm not saying that if properly executed it couldn't make you a million / billion dollars... But an idea is NOT a business. Nor is it an asset. Until you do some (very important) initial work - like creating a business model, doing customer development, creating a MVP, etc - all you really have is a dream. Right now your choices are: 1. Find someone with the skills or the money to develop your idea and sell them on WHY they should invest in you. And yes, this will mean giving up either a portion of the "ownership" or of future income or equity. And the more risk they have to take - the more equity they will want (and quite frankly be entitled to). 2. Learn how to code and build it yourself. MANY entrepreneurs without financial resources are still resourceful. They develop the skills needed to create what they don't have the money to pay someone else to do. 3. Get some cash so you can pay someone to do the coding. You'll probably have to have some knowledge of coding to direct the architecture of your idea. So you will likely still have to become knowledgeable even if its not you personally doing the coding. (This is not meant to be a comprehensive list of options... And I'm sure some of the other experts here on Clarity have others to add - and I hope they do) To wrap up - Here's my final tip to you that I hope you "get"... It's FAR more valuable to have an idea that a very specific hungry crowd is clamoring for right now - One that THEY would love and pay you for right now - Maybe even one they'd pre-order because they just have to have it - Versus YOU being in love with your own idea. [Notice I didn't say "an idea that some as-of-yet-undetermined market would probably love"] I wish you the best of luck moving forward.DB

Whats the best way to find commission sales reps?
This is not my specialty, however, I have been in your position many many times -- maybe this will help. If the product is in-tangible, then look for JV partners on the Internet. Try to find an expert that deals with these JV opportunities (like me). If the product is physical, then look for sales organizations that have networks of sales people across the country. You do the deal with the organization and the independent network of sales people sells your product. It's a sweet setup if you can negotiate a margin that works for everyone. Hope that helps - Cheers - NickNP
