Because she is familiar with China’s renewable energy industry, I asked Leslie to assist me with research for an article on the Renewable Energy Law. We communicated about this over several months. She answered every inquiry promptly and thoroughly, which is no small matter given the time difference between China and the U.S. On her own initiative, Leslie sent me helpful information and redirected the research when necessary. She found articles from Chinese publications and explained them to me, and made incisive and helpful comments on my outline for the article.

I was impressed with Leslie’s work, and asked her to translate the outline into a conference presentation. The outline was long and dense, and had to be revised from academic writing to a presentation format, but I had no doubt that she could do it. Leslie excels at explaining difficult concepts.

Her presentation sparkles off the page with clarity and verve. Leslie showed a keen eye for picking details that reflected core concepts. She sensed what I would want to emphasize, and what an audience would need to hear. Leslie’s graphics distilled key points (growth of China’s wind industry, governmental structure in China, renewable energy targets) into understandable forms. She added her own insights about renewable energy in China, and her visuals were superb.

Collaborating with Leslie was comfortable and easy. She handled my last-minute revisions with aplomb and suggested many of her own. Her warmth and grace made her an ideal teammate. Although I have never seen her teach, I am sure she excels at it. She would be a top choice for anyone who needs an understanding of difficult concepts and the communications skills to present them to any audience.

From Jan. to May 2006, Leslie was a peer advisor in the International Studies and Teaching Program at UC Berkeley, and I was her supervisor. She had excellent interpersonal, listening and speaking skills. During her weekly advising shifts, she made students feel comfortable by warmly offering her assistance, listening actively, and using her abilities in Spanish where appropriate. When a student asked a particularly difficult question, Leslie was resourceful in locating answers or providing detailed referrals to staff and faculty.
