Cynthia is the perfect kind of development editor - one who mixes a detailed-oriented approach to work, combined with a creative ability to suggest alternative methods of communicating challenging concepts to readers. There is no doubt in my mind that our book "Hadoop in Practice" would have resulted in an altogether different and less useful book had it not been for Cynthia's diligent work. I would work with Cynthia again in a heartbeat.

I always knew that I wanted to write a book, but I had no idea where to begin. Initially, I had a "lump" of writing...about 30 or so pages that didn't really make sense. I showed this "lump" to Cynthia and she told me that there was something there, that I had a novel in me. I am not sure how she recognized it, but she did, and currently I have been signed with a highly-reputable agent. Cynthia helped me to take my ideas and structure them. She guided me from the first chapter, showing me how to incorporate dialog and description, until the very end of the book, helping me to create a powerful and thought-provoking finish. Not only did Cynthia assist me in producing chapter after chapter, but she infused her insight and literary expertise into my work, making it a compelling story complete with a robust and active narrative. The end result was a success: I have a novel, of which I am proud and representation by an agent. Cynthia is great to work with for first-time writers seeing as though she knows the literary business from A to Z; however, she is also equipped with the skills and know-how for the more experienced writer. Working with Cynthia, I felt as though I was top priority even though I knew she had many other clients. Cynthia truly devotes herself to your work and has the foresight to spot a great story even if it is only in a "lump" form as mine was. I highly recommend working with Cynthia. She will offer you constructive criticism, support and the push you need to finish what you start.

Cynthia became our Development Editor for RabbitMQ in Action during the last 3rd of our writing process. She was incredible in treating the project as if it had been her baby too the entire time. We were set in our ways for producing material when she joined us, and Cynthia deftly adjusted to our process. Her editorial skills and recommendations truly made RabbitMQ in Action a better book. It would not be nearly as good as it's became without Cynthia. Even more importantly, she did a fantastic job acting as our "third base coach" to get us "home" when we were tired and fatigued by 18 months of writing. I wouldn't ask for any other editor than Cynthia the next time around. She's amazing.

Jonathan Anstey and I authored the Camel in Action book, published by Manning. Cynthia Kane was our development editor for the entire process. She did a fantastic job, and kept Jon and I on our toes, so we meet the deadlines. Cynthia provided us with excellent feedback on our draft chapters, which helped us tremendously during the writing process. We worked with Cynthia for about 2 years from start till finish of the book.
Without Cynthia chances are the book project would have fallen to the floor. Cynthia thank you for your great work and support.

On my next book project I would choose Cynthia any day if I could.

Cynthia Kane, Certified Meditation and Mindfulness Instructor answered:

Hi There -
I'm a development editor and literary agent with over ten years experience in the industry. Saw your question and thought I'd chime in.

You can mention the story in your book, yes, but you do need to reference Malcom Gladwell's speech or whomever said it and wherever it came from. It doesn't have to be formal, but something like, "When Malcom Gladwell was speaking at xxx, he told a story about ....." Then after that you'd connect the story to the point you're making or it's possible the story serves to support a claim you made beforehand.

If you're interested in hopping on the phone feel free to reach out.

All the best,
Cynthia
