MSc., PhD. Associate Professor @UIC, Director In-situ Nanomedicine Laboratory@UIC, Inventor, Author, Biomedical Engineer, Nanoengineer, Material Science Engineer, Mechanical Engineer.
Dr. Shokuhfar, associate professor at UIC and director of In situ Nanomedicine Lab, is an expert in the relatively new area within biomedical engineering known as smart and multifunctional nanobiomaterials, as well as more than 10 years experience in bone implants including hip implants , knee implants, and dental implants, placing her on a short list of pioneers in these fields. She has published 100 refereed papers and for the past recent years in a row has been cited more than 450 times/year according to Google Scholar, with over 2,100 citations. She has also published 6 book chapters, and has made more than 30 oral presentations of her work in invited talks and seminars at national and international venues. Her research has been presented in conferences (posters, proceedings) more than 100 times, and has been frequently picked up by media sources and scientific journals, such as The Economist, Science Daily, Orthopedic Design and Technology Magazine, Daily Mining Gazette, ABC 10 TV, Vimeo, CNN and Phys.org. As further evidence of the impact of her research and educational activities she has been recognized with numerous national awards: She is recipient of “NSF CAREER Award” that pioneers biomineralization at nanomaterial/protein interface. She has also received the “SFB Ortho SIG Faculty Abstract Award”, “TMS Young Leaders Award”, “DSL Young Scientist Award”, and “INSIGHT Diversity Award for Inspiring Women in STEM”. Dr. Shokuhfar has served as the Chair for Orthopaedic Biomaterials SIG at the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) till 2021 and is currently the Vice Chair for Nanomaterials SIG at SFB. She’s been the lead symposium organizer for the “Next Generation Nanobiomaterials for Orthopedic Applications” at the 2019 SFB meeting, the 143, 144, and 145 Annual Meetings of The Materials Society (TMS), and has been session Chair for more than 30 sessions in several conferences including SFB,TMS, BMES, ORS. She serves at the editorial board of the International Journal of Nanomedicine and Smart Materials in Medicine, and as the guest editor of Journal of Functional Biomaterials (JFB) and Advisor for JOM, Special Issue on “Functional Materials: Materials in Medicine and Bioengineering”. She has served in several leadership positions and was selected by the Crain’s Leadership Academy in Chicago
