TEACHER: My Advice Grades 4-12: Classroom Mgmt/Grading System/Working W/Parents

August 2016, I needed to make a difference that would count and I returned to the classroom to teach Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and English to exclusively chosen 7th Grade Boys who were labeled as our ‘Frequent Flyers.’ This phrase was coined because when these young men were in the 6th Grade, they frequently would cut their classes, which surmounted to them receiving more than a portion of F’s. Therefore, our decision was to have them contained in this one class, 1/3 the size, taught by me, Ms. Taylor’s VIP [Very Important People] Class. The goal was to develop a sense of stability, comradeship and an eagerness to learn. My Class was now ACADEMIC MASTERY.

I had discovered that my 7th Grade Scholars had never learned the fundamental elements of paragraph writing, addressing an envelope and how to tell time on an analogue clock and a plethora of subjects. Therefore, my curriculum had taken a new dimension and every day, on went the light bulb. Although they had learned this course of ‘Academic Mastery,’ I learned that I had a soft spot in my heart for these young men whose actions displayed a sense of protectiveness whenever they had witnessed an encounter of disrespect toward me amongst their other peers. Simultaneously the roles had changed. I thought that I had signed up to be their Teacher, but instead, I became their Student.

I have attended my Students' Birthdays, Graduations, Parent's Wedding, Baptism and many more auspicious occasions. The benefits are the fund memories that were created. I became one of the many dedicated Teachers who stayed because the purpose was not to collect a paycheck every 30 days, the purpose was to manifest into a vision that one day, our Scholars would matriculate into the great citizens who they were born to become!
