I am an email copywriting and launching an email marketing agency and I am currently doing market research to make sure I can properly solve the problems they're having. If there are any other challenges they face outside of email marketing, I'd love to hear those as well.
There are a few common problems when it comes to email marketing:
-Spam (annoying customers)
-Not opening your email if your subject line is not interesting enough
-Oversaturation (receiving too many irrelevant emails)
The answer lies in tracking. Tracking how well your emails perform is one of the greatest benefits of an email marketing strategy. Tracking how well an email does is amazingly simple and ESPs provide the necessary tools for you to be able to do all of that. Depending on the ESP you use, you have a great deal of data and to track and analyse. The kinds of data you can track include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Email bounce rates
2. Who opened emails?
3. What links were clicked
4. Customers that unsubscribe

The biggest challenge is engaging the consumer. Ensure you're doing your psychographic and demographic research and send out personal emails to each individual group. Don't send generic mass emails!
