I’m Jon Oscar Gary, a 50 plus-year-old man, with a Doctorate in Education; who’s had decades of experiences with qualitative and quantitative data collections, with black and brown urban Gen Z kids, as a researcher, story developer and most importantly classroom teacher. I've watched them grow up! I have taught thousands of students, over a 20-year period, in several urban communities. I understand what they eat, drink and who they are as people. I see their creativity before the trend and their true character before their TV, film and OTT depiction. This is the generation that owns their “blind spots,” and that intersect with new definitions of who they are, especially in the urban communities. I have a background in TV production with the Nickelodeon Writer’s Fellowship program, and have an MFA in film from Cal Arts as well. I’ve had the privilege of being mentored by pioneering Disney animator and educator Jules Engels, (e.g. Fantasia, Bambi, Mr. MaGoo) who instilled in me the process of character development for both live action and animation.
