Career Development and Reinvention Skills for Boomers
Created 11 years ago in Skills & Management / Coaching

If you're a Boomer like me, and you've been downsized or reorg'd out of your job, or even out of your career; if you've under-saved for retirement, like 80% of our generation, and even if you're fortunate enough to be able to retire in this economy, you're still asking the same question: how do I set myself up to create and sustain a meaningful, authentic and lucrative career and lifestyle that will truly support me into my 60s and beyond.
I created the Boomer Reinvention program based on my 40-year career working with creative talent and creative projects in the media/entertainment business - a competitive, fast-paced and changeable field where adaptability and innovation are key.,
Having been fired 39% of the time in my career (A badge of honor in my business), I've learned how to turn adversity into success. There are 5 key stages to the reinvention process, and I can help you apply them in your life for maximum benefit.
I believe that our lives can continue to be productive, connected , and purposeful. The world needs the Boomers to unlock and share our wisdom and experience so that we can contribute to making tomorrow better for everyone. It's up to us now, so let's get started.

A career development consultant serving HR and People & Culture initiatives, John Tarnoff focuses on reintegrating the Boomer Generation workforce into the rapidly evolving 21st century workplace. Managers in mid-life/50+ are seeing old paradigms replaced by 21st century digital concepts, workflows and practices. Boomers can play an integral part in this new organizational landscape – if they can translate their professional and life experience into meaningful, appropriate and effective collaboration. Experience is great, but Boomers must: -Go above and beyond to stay current and adopt a ‘beginner’s mind’ -Engage fully and transparently across flatter, networked business structures -Continue to learn and to grow, building self-reliance in the face of uncertainty -Serve all generations as compassionate mentors John created the Boomer Reinvention® system from the lessons he has learned over a 40-year career devoted to creative talent and creative projects in Media/Entertainment. Inquisitive, creative, unconventional, and an early adopter, John has held 18 positions over his career, as talent agent, studio executive, film and game producer, talent manager, BizDev consultant, project manager, and program developer. He has the distinction of having been fired 39% of the time in his career, a statistic that has, ironically, enabled (or forced, depending on your point of view) him to figure out the reinvention process. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, he developed and produced movies for Warner Bros, Columbia, MGM and others, founded a tech startup during the '90s bubble, and then led the artistic leadership training and university outreach programs for DreamWorks Animation. Since 2009, he has been serving as a professor and program co-lead for Carnegie Mellon University’s L.A.-based Entertainment Industry Management graduate program. John holds a MA in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, and a BA magna cum laude from Amherst College.

As cliché as it sounds, John Tarnoff is the epitome of someone who thinks out of the box. He is a brilliant mind. I ran a department that fell under John’s umbrella for several years at DWA. He enabled my group to act on many great opportunities. His leadership style was that of transparency and accessibility. Then, he just got out of the way allowing his teams to perform and excel – this is not often seen in the executive ranks. John continues to be a great inspiration and mentor.

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your TED talk on re-inventing. I think I am at that stage!! Your honesty, vulnerability to share your own experience and enthusiasm was refreshing. I am of that age and circumstance and am searching and feeling a bit stuck. I definitely will follow your suggestions! Thanks again, and keep them coming!

By the time I saw John's TedX talk "The Kids Are All Right," the job I loved had been over for 3 years and I was in reinvention mode without a coach. His presentation is entertaining and charming but it also hit a nerve because he's right. Apparently while I was so busy working, somebody had changed all the rules about careers. I needed to hear exactly what he had to say when he said it.
Thank you, John.
John is a gifted visionary, with all the enthusiasm and professionalism one could ever want or need.

His ability to actively engage a group, hold group focus, and thoughtfully explain the task-at-hand provided our department with a clear focus on the future.
